I went to the local community college and got my associate in arts degree first. Not only was I a bit more mature, but having that degree put me in at a slightly higher paygrade right from the start (E-3 vs. E-1). I think the difference was $150 a month or so back then.

I also had the opportunity to take some Psycology courses while at the community college, so it was amusing to watch the boot camp company commanders using rewards and punishments to change and control behaviors.

If you are thinking about joining up, don't assume the recruiter is looking out for your best interests. Verify EVERYTHING the recruiter tells you. If you want training in a specific job, make sure you get it in writing.
Good luck!

I went after 2 years of college. But I would in hindsight recommend going to college first and that individuals who are intelligent and have leadership qualities get into the officer side not enlisted. This is because as an officer you tend to have more authority for making positive changes in how things are done rather than just following orders and feeling like things could be run better but there's not alot you can do about it. I think the military works best when a person makes a lifelong career out of it.

Straight from High school, 22 days after graduation, I was in Navy basic training. THAT WAS A MISTAKE. 12 years later I am still in the Navy, still working on an Associates degree in something. Being a office Lackey for Civilians and Officers. I am disgruntled, but not too disgruntled.

I joined the Navy, 6 months after graduating from High School. Best time of my life. Serving in the US Military is both an honor and a privilege.

I screwed around for a year or so. My friend who was in the military told the recruiter about his other friends and he came a knockin'. He caught me and my friend when we where hung over and told us we could join the infantry on the "Buddy System". I didn't see my friend for 5 years after that. I served for 11 years loved very minute of it. "Rangers Lead the Way"!!

2 Years later. I did some searching for myself before hand, then finally decided to join the army.

I enlisted in '68 because you stood a better chance of getting the MOS you wanted if you weren't drafted. Got Airborne & still ended up in the "Nam" for two years.
