ok there is only one way to get rid of nits ... I shud know i woz a lil girl with long hair... anyway buy a nit comb wash the hair of the child then comb it through with thte comb (probably best done with conditioner) this should kill most of the nits, then do it again 3 days later , continue every three days until there are no nits left.
the reason it is three days is this is how long that the eggs take to hatch so hopefully you kill them before they have a chance to lay

I've been there. The ONLY way to get out nits is to pick them out. The combs (some electronic) and the other treatments only kill the bugs. You ever heard of "nit picking"? That is the only way. Be sure you have removed all the living bugs first. Any bug that is left can lay 100's of nits before you know it. Then begin removing the nits. Find a place that you can sit a desk lamp and and allow the girls to lay their head face down. Mine played her game boy while we did it. She could hold it where she could see it and it helped her deal with the long hours she spent in my bathroom. I always used the bathroom counter. Put the girl in an adjustable chair and go in small section from the neck up. When you first start it will take a few hours (per girl). Then daily do it again. This is an awful and tedious process, but in a week (provided they are not reinfected) you should be about finished. The amount of time it takes each day will decrease. Still look for a few more days once you stop finding them to be sure. One stray nit can turn into a whole new infestation.

I'm sorry this isn't an easy solution, but it is the safest. The last thing you want is to miss a nit and start all over in a week to two weeks.

I sympathize. My daughter was in a class with a kid that keep giving them back to her. II'd get them all cleaned out and she would have a whoe new army of lice. I battled it from the beginning of April until school let out. Once school was out for summer, no one was reinfecting her, and we were able to get rid of the nits and bugs for good.

Ordinary conditioner is the best and most effective treatment for nits. Wash the hair with your normal shampoo and rinse, apply plent of conditioner and saturate the hair from roots to tip, leave for 10-15 mins for the conditioner to soften up the eggs and live lice, then using a nit comb thoroughly comb through the hair section by section, rinse and check the comb after each brush and wipe away any eggs or lice, repeat this every 3 days for 2 weeks, its the only way to get the eggs out unless you want to sit picking them out by hand for hours. This method is great if you dont want to use chemicals which only kill live lice but dosent remove the eggs. ps.....its easier to do when bathing the kids and doing there hair as normal....my daughter also has very long hair and i use this method on her....works a treat.

Headlice have become resistant to almost all the over the counter treatements. The best way is to cover the hair in comditioner and comb through throroughly every two days for two weeks. Headlice don't like tea tree oil so once you're clear of them drop a few drops of tea tree oil intto your shampoo and conditioner it will help keep them away. And contrary to what most people believe you do NOT need to clean everything in sight, once out of the hair headlice cannot survive even if they climbed from a brush/towel/bedding into someone elses hair they have already been damaged hence the reason they aren't on a head of hair and therefore they are unable to reproduce.

There is an easy and sure fire answer to nits. They are insects, and like all insects breathe through pores in their skin. So they are covered in a waxy waterproof coating so that they don't drown.
All you have to do is apply a mild shampoo, leave it on for 4 minutes, then rinse. That amount of time in the soap will break down the waterproof wax, and they drown.
Then rinse, apply conditioner if its needed, then use a wide tooth comb.
Then use the nit comb.
Do this every 3 days for 2 weeks to clear all the eggs. After that check them every day when they come home from school and do it as needed.

I did this with my son after he was infested 3 times in one week by another kid at school, apart from the expense of the shampoo (especially with 3 kids!) you don't feel comfortable using pesticide on your kid that often.

Try the doctors I believe they will give you something on prescription.

I should think it could be a stronger version than those you buy over the counter, and because it's for your kids the prescription should be free. Also, if it doesn't work then you haven't paid out loads!

To prevent re-occurrence try getting them to have their hair tied back when they are with their friends and comb with a nit comb during hair washing with some conditioner in their hair.

When I was preg. with my third child, one of the neighbor kids gave us head lice. While I could use RID on everyone else, I could not. I had to use Apple Cider Vinegar... the smell made me vomit. Comb three times a day or more. I have a friend that said she used OFF. Just washing and combing isn't enough.... pillows need washing, bedding and if your car has a cloth interior, there too. They do make a spray for the car. But you MUST comb, every day, as often as you can. Use a knit comb or a flea comb (not a pet brush).

i would never use any of the lotions and potions on my daughters i wash there hair in the bath every night and when it gets to the conditioner stage i coat there hair in it... and comb it though totally until nothing more comes out..then after the final rinse and once you are drying the hair spray it with leave in conditioner something with tea tree in it...do that as often as possible and it will get rid of them and keep them away too!.. and remember to keep there hair up at school

Do you mean lice? Mayonnaise will kill those little suckers. Lather them up good with it and let it soak on their heads for a good long while; you know, a half an hour or so. You will also have to get one of those combs to comb them out of their hair; you don't want little corpses stuck to their heads.

You will also have to wash ALL the sheets and bedding, pillows, pillow cases, etc., in super hot water, as well as boil their brushes, combs, hair ribbons, etc., to kill them too, otherwise you'll never be rid of those nasty little suckers.

Good luck!
