Course it would be better to have 2. It would be better to have more than we needed of every organ so that when one packed up, the other could take over the function. Its like saying its better to have 2 cars in case one breaks down. Unfortunately, we have evolved to have the bare minimum, unless you count lungs and kidneys, we can survive quite happily with only one of those.

Of course it would be better to have 2 or even 3. But the liver is kind of big, isn't it? Not much space for more than one. It is the way all living beings were designed, so we all have to protect our only one and unique liver organ as much as we can. Be kind to it and give it milk thistle every day!

That's a bit like saying why don't we have two hearts. We have what we need to survive there are no backups. And before you say we have two eyes/ears just consider how different your life would be if you were to lose one! We need two eyes but get on ok with one liver. Look after the one you've got!

you know i suppose its all down to evolution and the way we evolved from apes (if you believe in the Darwinian theory) there are some schools that would absolutely Deni the theory that we evolved in favour of creation, but we;re not here to debate that,ok so back to the liver question:i guess just like our hearts stomach and other organs we only need one the liver breaks food down and metabolizes it into products your body needs so i guess one liver is big enough to do the job, hope this helps. regards terry

We used to have two but one day somebody went for an operation and the surgeon fancied liver and onions for his tea, so he removed one and had it for tea. After that day he told all the other surgeons how good it was to eat liver and onions, so every surgeon then started to remove everybody's spare liver and over time when new babies were born they only had one liver.
So there you have it.
By the way I used to have two willy's but I gave one to Jones the butcher cause he didn't have one.

It would - but it's not evolutionarily (is that a word?) viable. There's no reason for you to be born with an extra liver, and if you were, for the genes for that to be passed on. If someone WAS though, they'd make an absolute fortune selling their DNA...

Because the liver is the only organ in the body that can regenerate itself-- we don't need two if the one we have can fix itself!
