it is an unconscious function controlled by brain. though you can breathe actively, you will not die if you forget to breathe. it something that is permanently stored in brain and usually acts involuntarily. respiratory or breathing centers are located in the brain stem at the lower backside of the brain. just as beating of heart is controlled, breathing is also controlled without your knowledge.

My husband has sleep apnea. That's when you stop breathing while you're sleeping. He has a CPAP which is a machine that keeps him breathing. If you have sleep apnea it can really affect your health. High blood pressure, lack of sleep in addition to other things. If you're talking about normal healthy people, then the body keeps you breathing just as if you were awake. You don't think about breathing when you're awake you just do it. That is one of the reasons the human body is such a miraculous thing.

It's one of those involvuntary bodily functions that happens on its' own. The only time there is a problem is if you have sleep apnea and that is pretty rare....You can actually stop breathing with that condition but it is usually something that wakes you out of sleep and can be easily diagnosed....

There are what are called Voluntary and Involuntary muscle movement. Moving your leg is voluntary. Your heart beating and your diaphragm making you breathe are involuntary.
Some involuntary movements you can control at times (holding your breath, stopping your blinking). Some you can't (stopping your heart).
