I totally agree - there's a direct correlation between faith in an external power and a lack of self control.
As an Atheist, I have absolute respect for humans and nature, and I understand that I'm 100% responsible for my own actions. Anything that I do, I am the only one to blamee and I must face the consequences.
To the contrary, I have religious friends that can push the blam for bad things they do to coincidence, fate, or can simply remove themselves from the situation and remain "forgiven." It's crap as far as I'm concerned.

Wow - good question.
First is why African Americans are more into God. One reason is because they could identify with the injustice against Jesus and other characters in the Bible. Another is that the Bible was at first the only education that African Americans were allowed. Another reason is that African Americans gained their sense of equality amongst many things from the Bible.
I started reading the Bible in the context of evolving consciousness. Did you ever wonder why the Israelites built the calf idol and worshipped after they were saved by Moses and witnessed some miracles of God - doesn't it sound ludicrous? They did it because they were not thinking individuals - not like us now. They had been slaves with no self evident truths (Ten Commandments) with which to govern themselves by. So of course they would fall back into old practices without Moses guiding them. They had to walk the desert in isolation and co-dependence until the Ten Commandments did become self evident truths - then they had the tools to build a life and livelihood.
When you think about it, it is probably a good thing that African Americans had a book of self-evident truths to live by because when they were freed - they were also abandoned. Also African Americans didn't have/need 40 years for self evident truths to take hold - they had them and practiced them.
But where did things go wrong? You've got a populace that is totally working with the good book right - things should be better. I go back to the Bible itself. As a whole, the Bible ensures that it's believers think they are flawed and incompetent and seek salvation externally. This (plus persecution and inequality and others not adhering to the good book) made the African American population vulnerable to government intervention, salvation, and money. When African Americans partook of this unearned lifestyle - it unfortunately created a sense of hopelessness that mutated into a sense of entitlement vs. creating a sense of responsibility and confidence to create one's own life and livelihood. This hopelessness and entitlement are definite reasons for your list above.
You are frustrated because equate the belief and following of God with escaping reality. In a way you are right. By living life emphasized on the afterlife, one inately disregards the importance of this existence here on Earth. The Bible doesn't give reason to make improvements to one's station or intelligence, put the petal to the metal and fulfill potential - at least not the way it is interpreted today. And it's infuriating because you only get this existence and this time to fulfill this potential.
Below is a reference that may help understand and maybe create inspiration.
What I say here is true for all people - it is limited to African Americans because they are specifically the population in the question.

African Americans do in fact have the highest crime rate. Both as victims and as perps. The S.A.T. scores are low because the S.A.T. test is based on language commonly used in the white segment of our population. The highest number of single parents because the new federal welfare laws have not caught up to the new moms and dads in America. Once we made it unprofitable for young black women to get pregnant I believe you will find a falling off of the single birth rate in African American girls. (Please do not think this is racially based statement. I can show you a correlation in my own state how the single birth rate dropped dramatically the first year of the federal law limiting welfare payments to new moms.) The health problems can be related to the poor nutrition habits and for the stress. Inadequate medical care because african americans are less likely than any other segment in our population (besides illegal aliens) to get medical check ups yearly. Problems such as high blood pressure and diabetes go undiagnosed until the end stages of organ failure.
If anything African Americans should be counselled to continue their love affair with the God of the Universe. Some of us know Him by another name. The GREAT PHYSICIAN! THAT IS OUR REALITY!
I am concerned because they are my brothers and sisters also---and I'm not even african american. I am stunned that you would think you relate to african americans because you are one----more than I would relate to them. Christians are one in the body of Christ. Can you tell me if you feel that connection to the african american society. Or is it just that you want company out in that lifeboat. (watch out---there is a hole in the boat----you are going down if you don't patch it.)
God Bless You and yours.

Believing in God and knowing God are two different things, and when you have the relationship instead of the religion, all things are possible. The other answer may very well be the hardest to hear, but our God is sovereign and we will never know His reasons or plans until we meet Him in heaven. The chosen people, the Jews, don't have any more favor in heaven than do I. It is all about belief and relationship, and what you believe He can and will do in your life. Being a Christian doesn't mean things are going to be all blessings and hunky dory, it means you have someone to walk thru this life with you, who loves and adores you, and if you turn your cares and life over to Him will make this life sweet, no matter your circumstance. God doesn't make everything perfect, He want to perfect you, if it takes trial or tribulations, well He wants you to look for Him in that, to depend on Him for your strength. If you are blessed with a wonderful life and your road is smooth, you should thank God for that as well.
Again, it isn't that Christians have all the answers and are perfect, we are just forgiven and going to heaven, where we can be with our Father.

""Im concerned because of my love for them.""
Good that you are concerned for them .
I am very sure that many are VERY concerned for YOU!
It is terribly sad to see so many LOST when THE GOD is so near. Claiming one is a Christian is EASY.
If anybody in the family ever attended a Church - that can be the excuse. I am certainly aware that millions do attend churches and are indeed True Christians!
I do believe that if you would spend some time talking to the SCUM - like Rap artists, and other African Americans, -those who make FOOLS of the NOBLE RACE etc. more would be achieved.
I dearly hope that Bill Cosby, who shares your concern, can get a group or program going that convinces the kids that bein' a COOL DUDE is not the way to success.
I am a stupid pale face, here in Western Canada-- and EVEN I share your pain!

What would the stats by if those who believe in God went to the dark side? The prison population would increase. The number of single parents would increase. The crime rate would increase. Wouldn't it be preferable if more African-Americans would get religion and lead a moral life? Wouldn't that reduce the problems?

I think you're making a false correlation between religion and the problems you listed. Simply believing in God, in this secular day and age, doesn't amount to much. Lots of people say they believe in God yet they make no attempt to learn more about God or do God's will. These people are, in a sense, no more religious than an atheist would be, as they might have the belief, but they don't allow those beliefs to influence their lives. So I would not immediately make a correlation between religion and social problems because the active practice of one's religion would actually counteract most of the problems you listed.

Maybe it's because, in a country which is increasingly abandoning Christianity, the last people converted are the first ones to lapse. White people have had many centuries longer for Christianity to sink deep into our culture and ways of thinking, so that nowadays it still strongly influences even those who don't believe in God at all or who only semi-believe. Black people have not had nearly as long to develop a deep-seated cultural Christian worldview, and so when they individually cease to be strong and active Christians the world drags them down into evil very quickly. I don't doubt that white people will follow the very same path down into hell. . . it will just take a little longer, that's all. If all of us truly loved God and tried our best to live according to His word, there would never be any need to worry about any of those problems you mentioned, ever again, because they would vanish.

Believing that there is a God and going to church doesn't make you a Christian. The biggest problem with the black community is their constant belief in their victimology. The liberals and socialists in the government are constantly playing on the emotions of black Americans, creating an atmosphere of non-responsibility for their actions. "They can't help themselves" type of thinking. This has led to black men fathering children and walking away from his obligations to raise and teach that child, after all, we have welfare, food stamps and public schools for that. This is where the whole of the matter has been born, when black men start conducting themselves as responsible adults, then the whole of the black community will rise above this stigma of crime and dependence on the government. It has nothing to do with church or religion, everything to do with the way they think of themselves.

Actually, all of those problems can be traced to black people being swindled by the ACLU throughout the 20th Century. And yet you continue to lick their boots and vote for them in droves.
I don't understand that. People who make and contunually break their promises can not be considered your friend. Don't blame God for your own foolish choices. And stop blaming your circumstances on what happened to your great grandparents. Other races have gotten over their problems, why can't you? Japanese-Americans, Irish-Americans, and American Indians have managed to integrate just fine. What's wrong with you? Answer: You keep trusting lying Liberals who SAY 'We will take care of you, because we know you can't, you poor, stupid sot!'
Wake up and read some history.
