I'm in Canada for a year, but will go home after 5 months. I started an exercise program and hope to surprise my family and friends with my weight loss.

You can lose 1-2 lbs a week healthily. Any more weight loss than that, and you're losing muscle but keeping fat on your body. So, assume 2lbs for 20 weeks, and that's 40lbs. It'll take a lot of work, though. If you're doing it through diet and exercise, then you'll firm up, so it'll look like you've lost more. Lifting weights, nice heavy ones, will tone you up. Lift heavy, lift often! If you only do it through diet, then you'll lose weight, but you won't lose as many inches, and people won't notice it as much.

I bought a book called Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight for Everybody because I wanted to learn how to eat healthy and didn't trust Atkins and South Beach diets. In 12 weeks I lost 26 lbs with proper nutrition and excercise. I stopped "counting" my meals & excersicing after 12 weeks and have still managed to keep my same weight (minus 5 more lbs). If you are REALLY determined, you could lose the whole 40 lbs in 5 months but the process of learning "portion size" and "proper nutrition" is hard work. If you want to read my story, go to the website below.

if you do it right and you won't like this... 10lbs... or if you're young and not eating much meat.. 20lbs. that is a safe range. why though? the slower the better... longer lasting weight loss. and if you stick with a sensible diet 24/7 you'll be able to keep that weight off for all eternity unless medications are introduced or you have something wrong with you healtwise over time.

remember, fruits and veggies.. fresh produce is the best.

watch your fats.. like butter, milk.... marblized meats... (with much fat in the meat)

follow the food pyramid for a good and actually well rounded diet plan...

don't stop the things you enjoy... just moderate... the biggest reason for diets to back fire is expectations that are unreal and they cut all the things out they love.

exersize of course.. remembering moderate is the best.. all you got to do is like 30 min. of walking a day... take the stairs... ride a bike to short destinations instead of the car... (be careful! car drivers some of them got a thing with bike riders.. love to tease them and sometimes it ends up with disasterous results)

water, drink that water.

stay away from sodas often...

don't do those diets foods.. artificial sweeters don't convert so well in the body... they lay dorment longer than pure stuff.

don't each so much processed foods... fast food, boxed foods, frozen dinners.... stuff like that.

fruit juices that aren't fancy... with all that pizzaz and goodies.. just regular juices not from concentrate will do you just fine and are better.

the longer you do this the much better you'll feel.

in the beginning you may feel strange at times or weak but take it easy at first.. and you got a knack for a snack real bad.. just eat it in moderation you'll be fine as long as you stick with a healthy diet and exersize regiment that isn't extreme.

you don't need to do all that 'pain and no gain..' that stuff is short lived and backfires way too often.

breakfast: 1/2 C bran cereal 1/2 low-fat milk with a little juice and a piece of fruit (i eat raisin bran w/banana in it and cranberry juice) 2 hours later snack- little applesauce or cottage cheese? Or something healthy just a small snack. Lunch- tuna with 1 slice of wheat bread, or chicken in a can (i don't like tuna) or if you like cereal do the same breakfast or... slice of wheat with a piece of turkey and cheese along with some fruit. 2 hours later another healthy snack. Dinner a half chicken breast simmer with lid on for 30 minutes add some Italian dressing when its finished eat it with a little baked beans and veggies (i usually simmer broccoli) lots of water... exercise, if you don't have time or don't like exercises walk 30 minutes a day. I started this dies and for the first 3 weeks lost 6 pounds.... I stopped it because I just start eating wrong. We can do it together, email me and we will motivate each other if you want and make sure we each get 30 min of walking or even more exercise. Id love to have a weight loss buddy so I stick to it :)

two pounds a week is what they say the most you should aim to lose, which about 8 pounds a month. Add to that that and the first week you're going to lose at least 5 pounds of water weight. So, what around 45 lbs? Very doable if you really stick to your diet, eat only healhty stuff and don't cheat. But you could do 30 easily.

Depends how strict you're going on the exercise program. At most, maybe 20 pounds.
First of all, don't even try those diet programs. they're all bogus.Once they claim that you will (exageration) "lose 100 pounds in 30 weeks!" s****. You'll gain those 100 pounds in no time.
What I'd recommend you doing is eating whole grained breads and stuff for better digestion.
Swimming! when ur on a exercise program, always swim! It helps you lose tons of weight while getting nice looking muscles AND improving your cardiovascularity. Lifting weights is good to, but don't strain yourself when you're doing it. For dumbells, no more than 20 pounds than what feels comfortable to do at least 10 reps of 10 on each arm.
Drink alot of water for a faster metabolism. Drink milk to lose weight, and there's protein, calcium, and vitamin D. So what do you have to lose? Only 90 calories per serving!Don't drink too much juice. Toooooo much sugar. Those Welches grape juices has almost 50 grams of suger per serving! That's too much for only one cup of juice. If u want something sweet, get one of those fruit flavored water things. like Flavor Splash from Aquafina.
Make sure your consumption of vegetables a variety everyday. Maybe oranges (carrots) and greens (broccoli. TONS of fiber) one day, and the next day purples (eggplant) and reds (tomatoes). If you stick to only one type of vegetable, you're not getting the benefit of all the nutrition of the other vegetables. Salad is the best food if your on a diet, it's light and doesnt have alot of calories. But if you want some kind of dressing, use those low calorie/fat free dressings. Remeber, all vegetables have little calories. So you could literally stuff yourself with vegetables and only get like 800 calories in a day's worth of vegetables. Okay, which one: carrots or peas? Peas.
Snow peas nutrition facts:

Snow peas (frozen, uncooked), 1/2 cup
Calories: 55
Protein: 3.7g
Carbohydrate: 9.8g
Total Fat: 0.26g
Fiber: 3.38g

Carrots:
Calories 35
Protein .86 grams
Carbohydrates 8.19 grams
Dietary Fiber 2 grams
Calcium 24.18 mg
Iron .47 mg
Phosphorus 23.4
Vitamin A 19,152 IU
Vitamin C 1.79

As you can see, peas has more protein and fiber.
Don't even bother eating fast food, or chinese food because they're all greasy., and fast food has waayy too much sodium. Eat kimchi, a korean food that is high in vitamins, minerals, and lactic acid. It aids digestion, and may even prevent cancer.
If you're going to eat meat, eat fish. Fish has more beneficial factors than red meat. Omega-3 for example.
Snacks: plain and unsalted popcorn, unslated nuts, and if your thirsty, drink water. no gatorade or power drink s***. They're only chemicals.
If u just HAVE to eat red meat, boil it until you're sure that every single gram of fat is gone. Literally... EVERY gram of fat. If you're going to eat chicken, beef, or whatever, don't boil it with the skin still on.

It depends on how much you weigh and how much you eat -- I lost five pounds in five days by walking 2 miles a day and eating toast, tea and coffee, but I was 235 pounds and should be 225 (and 6'2" tall)...I did the tea and toast approach to get my metabolism going in the right direction and now I am back to a regular, nutritious diet and still walking -- and the weight is still coming off...but once I get to 225, it will really slow down cause there won't be much to lose. Be careful -- and good luck.

Using exercise and proper nutrition [not some fad diet], you can reasonably expect to lose between 1/2 and 1# per week. More is possible, but by losing slowing - changing your eating habits plus an exercise regimen - you stand a better chance of keeping it off.

1-2 pounds a week is a safe bet. If you exercise and eat right, you could possibly lose up to 40 pounds! Don't set your goals too high though. It is much better to go slowly and correctly than try and do it too fast.

Good Luck!! .
