I hear people posting saying things like: At least we can think for ourselfs! As if to say look at me I'm a big boy/girl..I can think on my own, as if that's some intellectual revelation. It would seem to say Christians need approval to think or to have thoughts or don't have the ability to think because we as 94% of all Americans believe in God. As if to say the 6% are the most brilliant because they don't believe in God so that makes them more intelligent. I don't think they see their own arrogance with such statements.

I think the next time I see this: Look at me I can think on my own like a Big Boy or Girl I'm just going to ask if they burp themselves too.

Am I seeing this right?

I don't think you're seeing this right. Let me try to explain what "I" mean when I say we can think for ourselves. I happen to come across many Christians (mainly Catholics) in my life. And in certain topics, which the Church has something to say about, you hear them ALL say roughly the same thing. You've heard one, you've heard them all. It's sad to say that I have heard nothing new from a Catholic, when it comes to those crucial topics. On the other hand, unbelievers in general (whether they are atheists, agnostics, or whatever) tend to have a more varied range of different answers on these topics. These answers are so varied that you'll find completely contradictory opinions from different unbelievers. Besides, unbelievers tend to listen to what you're saying and even to change their mind, if your argument convinces them. A discussion with an unbeliever is a true discussion. Believers discuss from their doctrine and prejudices. Unbelievers discuss from our prejudices, too. But we don't have a doctrine, so we only trust our minds and more or less limited intelligence.

Of course, believers are in average just as able as we are to think for themselves in other less important matters. And in those topics that the church seems not to care about, you do hear the most varied answers from different people, and lots of original and interesting ideas, too. But I have had the experience to discuss some things like abortion, sex outside marriage, or marriage after divorcing, to mention a few examples, and the Catholics have all said quite about the same thing to me. I know their answers by heart. That's what I call "not thinking for themselves".

Oh, and yes. I don't need any help to burp.

If it makes you happy to see it that way that is your right. Why do people let such small matters get under their skin... is it really worth it. I don't get bent out of shape when people say I'm going to hell because I'm an atheist.. its just not worth it.. it's trivial. There are more important things in the world to worry about than that.

No, you are not. When they say this they are meaning that they look at each situation and then make a decision. They do not default to the explanation of God is the reason for...Or, I think this way b/c God wants me to....

Make sense?

Anyway, it is not a very good way to get their point across. Don't let it get to you. Of course, you can think for yourself and still believe in God.

What they are saying is we can cross the street without consulting the bible, asking god, or wondering if it is christian of us. We don't have the church tell us what to think. If you could think for yourself, you would understand. I don't need a priest to hold my little hand as I walk through life. I don't try to get everyone to believe in my imaginary friend, or fairy tails. Now you are the childish one. If this bothers you so much, you must be questioning your faith, as you know atheists are correct.

Not all of the 6% or so of the smartest don't believe on God. Our brain is more for controlling our body. The soul does the thinking.

Some ppl don't think Christan's think for themselves because they seem to follow religion blindly and ppl just presume they have never questioned their religion or have ever had doubts about god. U can't stop ppl thinking or saying stupid things unfortunately.

You are %100 right, while the God-haters will live and thrive on the wisdom of experts, we choose to reference our lives according to the perfect wisdom of God. His word is infallible, perfect, and applicable in every second of our lives. Praise be to the sovereign Lord of Lords.

depends - do you think for yourself? Using our minds has nothing to do with religion or non-religion, other than how we choose to apply those thoughts to daily life.
