Since this question is in the preschool education section of the questions, I'm assuming that you're asking in reference to a preschool child. I think it can be a great resource; shows like Sesame Street and Dora the Explorer can be very educational. However, TV is like candy - a little goes a long way. It is also best if you watch TV with your child (rather than use that time to do housework or whatever). Then, you know exactly what they've learned and where they've learned it and you can discuss the show with your child.

Are we talking about preschoolers watching TV or....???
I think in general TV is not a good idea for preschoolers. Yes, there is some learning that goes on with high quality shows like Sesame Street, Dora, and Blues Clues. But kids can learn those concepts just as well interacting with an adult, which is a healthier situation than passively sitting in front of a TV. TV time should be extremely limited for preschoolers, IMO.
For older children and adults, TV is like anything else. It can be abused and in excess it causes problems. However, it also has a lot of potential for good. You can inform and educate yourself through TV in ways you can't with print or electronic media....seeing photos of the Berlin Wall coming down was not as moving IMO as watching the news footage. A poor child in the inner city or rural America has opportunities through PBS and educational cable channels (assuming the cable companies are willing to service their geographic areas which isn't always the case) to experience things they wouldn't normally have access to...they can listen to symphonies, learn about peoples an animals in foreign countries, watch speeches by former & current world leaders, etc. And while the value of some items broadcast on TV is questionable, there is some entertainment value as well, which improves our quality of life.
Used well, a TV is a powerful tool. Just because people can & do use it poorly doesn't make it a waste of time... I'll probably never attend a national political convention or presidential debate or the Olympics, but I want to be able to see things like that in real time, as they happen and I'm grateful that we still have free access to broadcast media in our country so that I have that opportunity.

Television is not good for a 1 year old. Parents need to spend time with their kids. Education programs are good for preschoolers but not violent cartoons are too much. Television influences children at a way too young of an age too much. The child needs to know the enviroment around them and be influenced by the parents than by the television. As kids grow , their knowledge grows and with parents they know right and wrong , but with tv, they are not knowing.

That depends on what you're watching. If it's "reality" TV, then yes I agree with you. However, there are plenty of other programs that have some redeeming, constructive qualities.

as i call it "AN IDIOT BOX"....
for it acts like an idiot sometimes but it is sometimes as valuable as gem.....
sometimes a waste of time but sometime not.....
it all depends on Wat type of program u prefer to watch on TV.....
if u like something like creativity or discovery or games and cartoons or if u want to like to be WATS going around the world thru news it is indeed a boon......
or else if u like the daily soaps or some vulgar things or acts of terrorism then it is a curse or a waste of time.....
so decide Wat u like 2 c on TV n decide whether is is a waste of time or not........
