You need something installed called a "Transfer Switch". Don't make some pigtail or other home brew solution, unless you hate your house and want it burnt down. Your insurance company will negate any claims for reasons of abuse. Link is for an example of what you need.

Do NOT make an extension cord with two male ends. That's a good way to get a shot of 110 V where you don't want it. Before you hook a generator into your house system you need to shut off any connections to the incoming power. If you don't, you stand a good chance of incinerating your house. If you want to just use a generator for some things, think about just plugging those into the generator. If you want a longer term, permanent setup, You can install a male receptacle near the breaker box hooked into whatever circuits you want to power with the generator. It's not a slam dunk deal as you can easily overload generators.
