Well, obviously, the person wanted some chips and bought some. They were perfectly in their right to do that, and if they like chips then they are not going to buy anything else if that is the food they want to eat at that moment in time.
Now lets say the person is thirsty, and want a drink of coke, they're going to buy the coke. BUT their is a diet option there, it's not good for them but at least it is reduced calories so they are doing something to try and cut down.
Not everyone can go somewhere and have a salad or something, some people just can't stand the taste of it and so have to go with a less healthy option, or aren't as able to resist unhealthy foods, no matter how hard they try: I am one of them.

Chips contain FAT...Cola contains SUGAR.
Both have calories, but in different ways. And the main offender is sugar, a Carbohydrate.
Cutting down on sugar, especially in something drunk, regularly, that doesnt fill you up, like a food would, makes sense.
Pop contains masses of sugar. You should only really get your calories, from FOOD, for a successful diet. Pop has more calories than soup! and your not even eating it!
Fat is not all bad, in a dietary sense, hence the atkins diet, and many people gain weight, from Carbohydrate (sugar, bread, cereal, spuds) which is an instant energy food, designed to be burned. Some people's bodys dont burn food well, or quick enogh...so it HAS to be stored as fat, as it can't be burned as quick as it enters the body, like those people who seem to eat without putting on weight, are just efficient Carbohydrate burners.

Because they dont sell diet chips so a diet coke is a small compromise and we feel less guilty for eating chips. Take the C off chips and what do you get?

Because a can of coke is extra fat on top of the chips. Also, it's quite a bit of fat because of all the sugar inside. It is best to avoid chips but if you do have them I'd sooner people had a low sugar drink than a high sugar one.
Doing a little to reduce calorie intake is better than doing nothing.

I guess if you buy a diet drink it takes some of the guilt away from eating fatty foods as you think that your being a little good!

Diet coke uses different sweetners to regular coke, and some prefer that taste. Also, if you're thinking of you're teeth, diet coke is better.
