The witnesses were credible.
In the book, "The Case for Christ", Lee Strobel took the approach that a modern court would take, and provided evidence of various types. Among these, are the eyewitness accounts.
1. The did not do it for fame nor fortune.
2. Almost all of them died as a result of their reports.
3. The Book of Acts is dated no more than 20 years after Jesus died.
4. The last book written in the Bible, The Gospel according to St. John, was written at about A.D. 99.
In case you're wondering about the discrepancies, that is normal. Four neutral witnesses of a car accident will give different accounts as far as the DETAILS are concerned but the main points will remain the same. The discrepancies in details will vary from 10 % to 30 %. This is also the same level of discrepancy in the Gospels. And furthermore, most of the apparent discrepancies can be harmonized.
Forget Moby Dick: that was a allegory, similar to Animal Farm and Pilgrim's Progress. Jesus, as described in the Bible, WAS historical. And He came to show to a warped world what God was like.

I would like to answer from an analytical point of view.
Moby Dick is a work of fiction and it has always been a work of fiction and nothing more. It did not stem from ancient times and so you are comparing apples to oranges.
When looking at ancient texts not just the Bible, in different cultures and societies there is a 'story' about a flood that covered the earth and big boat that saved mankind from being destroyed. This is common from India to the ancient Azetecs in Mexico. There are also parallel's with the Tower of Babel and other Biblical events.
If you look at the Old Testament as a history book, although skeptics have tried to disproove it, the archeologist keep finding proof that things in the Bible COULD have happened the way it is written, including such things as Ninevah and Assyria.
Now lets look at the manuscripts themselves--ancient texts preserved by society today that are considered true and acurate portrayls of ancient history have fewer copies of their manuscripts than the Bible and when I mean fewer I mean hundreds of fewer manuscripts. The copies of the other texts have more errors or discrepencies between the ancient texts than between the Biblical ancient texts. And yet the Bible is the one that is questioned more and ridiculed more.
There is no other religion in the world that all I have to do to be saved and go to heaven is to believe in Jesus Christ, believed he died to save me from my sins and accept his FREE gift and invite him to be my Lord and Savior. Other religions require massive amounts of doing good works or praying just so.
So why wouldn't I believe? I get hope and to heaven in one shot for FREE--I don't have to do anything else, and there is not an ounce of evedince on this planet that has proved the Bible to be a work of fiction.

There is no such thing as God.
I still am confused on how the United States that can believe that someone is a murderer for being in the wrong place at the wrong time and still believe in God, which is absolutely silly. Do you have any proof of God?
Face the facts, there's something called Science and that's all there is.

Dear Deckape,
Thank you for the interesting question. I would suggest, Herman Melville, author of "Moby Dick" never claimed it was a true story, but promoted it as a work of fiction. Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, each presented there writings as the truth as inspired by God. Melville did not die proclaiming MD to be true. Saint Matthew was killed by halberd(a weapon that is both spear and battle ax) if he were lying about any detail of his account of the Gospel, let alone the gender of the Messiah, he would surely recant to save his life. Saint Mark would was beaten to death proclaiming the truth of his account. Saint Luke, a physician, allowing himself to be hanged while defending his salvation account. Saint John survived many things, including being boiled in oil, and died of old age, perhaps in his 90s or even 100 years old, and he never swayed in his testimony.
Consider how quickly modern men fold under the slightest pressure, even young, verile heroic men, Senator John McCain gave up treasonous military secrets after minor torture and sleep deprivation, not even near the point of death. Torture works, people will tell the truth under the threat of pain. No one would risk their lives for a lie, that would profit them nothing, let alone knowingly give up their lives for a lie.
Melville was never in that situation, because he did not contend it were true. I suggest if one were to put a contemporary author to torture, he would quickly deny any lies in his work. I am not sure of who the best selling author of the past few years has been, but if you were to torture him, or even threaten to torture him, I am sure he would publically recant every scant detail that was false, or gave a false impression.
Embrace the Grace,
