My husband is thinking of joining the army or reserves as an IT specialist. What kind of work do you do in that position at home or while at war? Just wondering as a wife how dangerous is it. What are the chances right now if he were to join either branch with that job of being deployed, and just because you have a job like that does that mean you will not be on the front lines?

The military uses IT everywhere, from the front lines to the rear echelons to the hardened data centers.

As a 21+ year Air Force veteran, a dozen of those years with additional duties in IT, I have to say that it is fascinating work. It prepared me well for a very lucrative post-retirement career in IT.

That said, the Guard and Reserves are heavily tasked for roles in Iraq and Afghanistan. Statistically it's a certainty that he'll be deployed there eventually.

There are many jobs that involve IT in the military nowadays, so what he does will really depend on the job that he chooses. What is important for you to know is that many Reservists have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, so there is always a chance that he will be deployed as well. Also, there is no "front line" in modern warfare. Many of the support personnel in Iraq are stationed in Baghdad, a not very safe place.

There are a ton of IT type positions now in all branches especially Air Force. As a reservist in today's climate he can pretty much bet he will be deployed. He just needs to make sure he gets into an IT position in the service and that will be determined by his ASFAB scores and availability of a class. Your best information would come from a recruiter. Best of luck to you.

Well the US military will let him think he is getting a desk job but soon after he will be redeployed and sent to Iraq to die in an illegal war for oil and profit and the New World Order.

They'll promise him anything to get him to enlist, and they're not obligated to keep any of those promises. They don't have to let him quit because they didn't keep their promises, either.

That said, if he's valuable enough to them in an IT function, the possibility of being sent to the front lines is pretty slim. Foxholes don't usually have wiring closets.
