Although if it was literal and a huge mass of wormwood did fall from the sky and burn up on the way down it is possible the hallucinogens within the absinthium would disperse into the atmosphere.

How would you feel if you were God and someone 'loved' you and 'believed in' you only because they were afraid of what would happen if they didn't? I bet you'd see right through it and be thinking, 'Mm-hmm. They love me, my hat! Try "They love saving their own posterior!"'

In other words, we don't make a big deal about that because we want people to turn to God not out of love for themselves - desire to avoid punishment (or for that matter, get a reward) - but rather out of love for Him.

After all, the same God who said, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength (Deuteronomy 6:5), also said, '...there is no fear in love, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. (I John 4:18) Not to mention 'Love does not seek its own (See 1 Corinthians 13:4-5).'
