yes, different formats are used to record diff rent things such as different cams or sound recorders these are called codaks not sure how to spell but any who thats why you need diffrent players. plus some web sites are sponsored by quicktime therefore you have to use it on those sites.

You could use Quicktime Alternative which includes media player classic to play quicktime files .
