Wow! Two all time greats with probably along with Joe Louis possessing the most punching power. I believe they were equals in power and I believe Marciano had an edge in endurance and durability although Jack was also very tough. And if either got the other in trouble both were known as great finishers so someone would get knocked out. Since he was undefeated I'm going with Marciano by 12th round TKO in a great fight that could have went either way! Great question!

This is a very interesting situation. In the days of Dempsey, the fighters did not go to the neutral corner, this began with the Dempsey Tunney fight, as per Dempseys' stipulation. Both men where brawlers and Marciano had a small reach, so he would have to stay inside and go to the body. Dempsey, on the other hand, would hit and the bout would end by the judges as a split decision draw

I'd go for the Rock. They were both brutal fighters, just look at Jack Dempsey tilt at Jess Willard's heavyweight championship.
Every fight the rock fought was a war. Rocky could take and deliver it in large quantities. I'd go for Rocky Marciano

Rocky Marciano by TKO, period.
Marciano will visit the canvas 5 times in the process but he will win.

Dempsey - W 65 (KO's 50) TF 82 - W pct 80% { he had 11 draws} - KO pct 61% [his all-time rating as a puncher took into account the 11 draws] - wins over Williard and L. Firpo - KO'ed by Jim Flynn - later became a referee - 7th greatest puncher of all-time - 16th greatest fighter of all-time.
The Golden Age of Sports - Babe, Dempsey and the "Galloping Ghost" Harold "Red" Grange.

Marciano - W 49 (KO's 43) TF 49 - W pct 100% - KO pct 88% - wins over Louis, Walcott[2], Moore and Charles{2} - KO'ed by none - 14th greatest puncher of all-time - 12th greatest fighter of all-time - retired undefeated as Hwy wt champion and as a fighter.

This fight is unbelievable; a double stoppage referee calls fight in 14th. Dempsey unable to continue and Rocco stopped on cuts.

Rocky. A tough fight to be sure but "The Rock" did whatever it took to win. Rocky wins a TKO only because Dempsey would have been too stubborn to fall.

awesome question - i think dempsey would've mopped the floor w/the original rock, early, knocking him down repeatedly....but then rocky would've gotten up, after every knock down and just gone to work on the manassa mauler. i say after a brutal, bloody, and extemely thrilling fight, rocky would've knocked him out eventually in the late, late rounds. what he lacked in skill and grace rocky more than made up for in heart, and one can never rule him out of a fight. he just refused to lose and that will and determination and pride of his.....have mercy!

p.s. to the two below, "somebody up there likes me" was about rocky graziano, not marciano; and marciano was defeated, once, as an amateur by a black man named coley wallace who, interestingly, later played joe louis in several different movies! factoid for the day~
