Check the coolent level first. If its ok then the cooling fans may not be working. Under the hood is a fuse box, check all fuses to see if they are blown. If they are ok them I recommend finding a good mechniac to look into this. A engine can take so much overheating before damage will occur. You will be money ahead to find someone to fix the little thing before the big thing happens.

it sounds like from what you have said that the cooling fan for the air conditioner isn't working,,this will cause it to do this at any stop,,because the car isn't moving,,the air does not circulate as good as if it were moving,,while driving your forcing air through the radiator,,but when sitting it does not ,,you need to check the fuses and make sure that the one for the fan is good,,if that checks good it probably has a bad relay for the cooling fan,you need to take it and let a shop check it,,just to be sure,,too much heat can cause some serious damage to the engine,,i mechanic for a living,,so i see this kind of thing,,every day,,i hope this help,s.

MIGHT BE SATAN HIMSELF SITTING UNDER THE HOOD TOO, BUT I DOUBT IT!!!
sounds to me like maybe the coolant fans are not working...so the only cooling air it gets is when it is moving...that will make the ac blow hot at stops because the air is not blowing across the condenser so the ac quits till you start moving again also, when you stop, up goes the temperture but soon as you start moveing the temp comes back down. no other problem will allow the engine to cool down when you start moving again....good luck

Probably a thermostat. If this fails, coolant can't flow through the engine at proper quantities, causing your car to overheat.

could be the thermostat, but check to see if the fan works, with the a/c on.
