Like if he has been reported to the medical board or had major lawsuits for malpractice...

Is there a way to really know if a surgeon is a hack before you let him do surgery? How can you check?

First check with local medical associations. Second, check with the State Licensing Agency but unfortunately, the medical community also covers up for each other. My Chief of Medicine was known as 'Shaky Jake' as he had a bit of a drinking problem, but no one at the hospital ever mentioned it..the best thing to do is to get a second opinion and try to find one of the younger surgeons, as they tend to be better than the older guys.
