My golden retriever is 7 months old now. Brought her home at 7 weeks. My cats are both 5 years old. The smaller one hated the dog but now tolerates her...the dog learned quickly not to bother her. The fat cat was predictably curious and tolerant right away. The dog likes to play with her because she seldom retaliates. Your cat will know how to defend herself so don't worry about her and the puppy will learn fast what not to do with her. Oh by the way the cat of mine that hated the puppy goes for walks with us.

With the puppy, buy a crate to help train him. This will be his special place. Don't use it for like punishment until he's alittle older.

Make sure your cat has plenty of space to get away from the puppy. Don't have the cat food/water where the puppy can get it. And correct the puppy when he gets overly curious.

Our 18 month puppy has gradually gotten less interested in the cat and she has gotten less panicky when he gets up close.

They'll adjust - just keep things under control.

the two will work out a pecking order and the puppy will learn. If it runs up on the cat the cat will smack it with its claws it might take a couple of times but don't stop it they need to work it out on their own for them to be able to live in the same house

the puppy will most likely be no problem its the 12 yr old cat that is set in her ways that will cause the problem. a puppy is rambunctious and will bother the older cat who will not want to be bothered by a puppy. you will need to keep them separated till they except each other which may never happen

You can't....but you can keep it down to a minimum. Supervise their interactions until you can trust their 'relationship'. The cat will definitely show your pup that it's the boss of the house...and the puppy will accept it. Once they each know their place/status in the household and your pup grows up a little then you shouldn't have a problem.

Just don't force them together...your cat will either accept it's new housemate or it will totally avoid it.

you don't need to keep them from fighting your cat will put the puppy in his place and that's is what needs to happen.
the puppy will quickly learn to respect his elder. and every thing will be cool. your cat might have to smack the puppy in the face a few times but there wont be a fight
the puppy WILL cower. and in time they will learn to live with each other.

They usually work it out . The puppy is going to be hyper and run up to the cat, the cat will smack him and I doubt he will do that again.
