Studies can have harmful physical affects on children. In cases involving children with psychological disorders it was revealed that researchers added experimental psychotropic drugs in the food of adolescence patiences of psych. wards. These drugs were later found to have severe physical and mental side affects. Another way in which this is harmful lies in the over analysis of childhood behavior. Instead of respecting the irrational and typically moronic behavior we all exhibited as children researchers attempt to categorize and interpret patterns in order to reach diagnose. For many kids this diagnoses is irreversible, therefore a child can only achieve a status of remitting x, rather than the analysis be overturned. This could subject them to further treatment which interferes with their typical childhood experience.

I just finished a course in Contemporary Educational Issues and we discussed this a lot. The topics that it related to were Homework, Full Day Kindergarten, State Testing (and NCLB), Recess (being cut all over because schools need more time for test prep-NCLB again).

However I don't agree childhoods have yet been snatched away because my students seem REALLY good at video games.

I would say modern society plays its role. For instance, both parents work, latch key kids, kids forced into afterschool programs and activities instead of making their own fun in the backyard. And immigration-many come here from countries that don't sent their kids to school, so they are just happy the kid goes every day, but then they are expected to help at home instead of doing homework (be it babysitting siblings, or going to work with Mom at night, or cooking dinner while Mom and Dad finish their second job).

The act of having children study various subjects is essential to later development, I agree that we need to overhaul our school practices and not worry so much about tests, but instead teach fundamental principles as opposed to covering as many subjects as the current American teaching methods.

I strongly suggest we put an emphasis on teaching the art of learning above of all else. If ideas don't interest students they in turn won't be compelled to research and ask questions as often as they might otherwise.

To suggest schooling is the reason kids stay at home would be to grossly overlook the evolution of digital home entertainment and how it has affected the youth (and the general population) over the last 20-30 years.

Imagination is starting to be up for review as cable and video games shower the next generation with fictional as well as solicited information. This provides dangers of its own context and may make individual creativity an endangered species.

Nowadays, children are not enjoying being kids. I see very few kids playing outside on the roads compared to the ratio of kids I saw playing 5-6 years. The parents are forcing them to study with let them enjoy their present life. From young age only they are being introduced to stress and tensions. The schooling system is also not good with having unit tests for every 2 months. Then all they can concentrate is only on studies.

I don't think it is so much that studies have snatched away childhood. It is the organized after school and weekend sports, music, extra lessons, play dates, etc. etc. extra-curricular activities that have snatched childhood. Children should be allowed to have fun and use their imaginations to have fun. Even allowed to daydream once in awhile.
