why does it always have to be a handbasket???

and furthermore...exactly what kind of handbasket???

I do sometimes - if I'm in that mood. Other times I don't - if I'm in that mood.

You have to look at all the ways that the world is better now than it once was, and you have to either try to figure out what you can do to make what is worse better or else you have to just hope that what is worse will better better.

Sometimes the world is only as big as your immediate little world around you. You do what you can to make that a great "world" to live in. The reasoning to this is if every little, tiny "world" was a nice one then the "larger world" would be better from the inside out.

Einstein thought that. Now bear with me...the world is riding along the galaxy and space and time and gravity act like one big basket woven around it. If just one of the threads of the basket suddenly and without warning were to break - then the world is propelled out of its orbit and it spins into a black hole. Now, I've spun into a black hole before and it can be pleasurable. So, don't worry about it, be happy.
