It was the custom of the time to serve wine at parties. Running out of wine would have been a social faux paux. Jesus must have known the groom and didn't want him to be embarrassed.
BTW, anyone who says the wine didn't have alcohol in it is an idiot.

ok i think this is the best question i have ever seen on here you make a really good point
as for my opinion:
Why is turning boring water into an alcoholic beverage a miracle to Christians? can you do that :P
Why do Christians always say that the alcohol level was lower back then? this is based on what? i would not know for sure of course but i would think people say this because those times were so long ago i would think that people could not handle the sort of alcohol we have today maybe i am wrong :P
Have you seen how prisoners today make alcohol by fermenting fruit themselves? no i have not
and what about bath tub gin and moonshine? nope
And um, if it wasn't really "wine" , why didn't they just call it "grape juice"? i think it was really wine and not just juice
really awesome questions:P i hope someone can give you better answers then me :P

Why are you asking this question when you seem to have all the answers already?
Just in case you really want to learn the correct answer, I recommend you study some of the principles of hermeneutics.
Did you know that the oxford dictionary of 100 years ago defined "wine" as 'unfermented concentrated grape juice'?
In the Old Testament, there were different words used for wine so that when translated, wine means unfermented grape juice or strong drink. In the New Testament, only one word is used in the original Greek, and it could mean either one : the context determines which one. Yes, you better study some hermeneutics.
Oh, why did the wine run out? Because in ancient middle-eastern culture, a wedding lasted one week. And the grammar in this Bible incident says, "when they had well drunk" NOT "when they were well drunk". You know, not "drunk" as in being intoxicated by imbibing alcoholic beverages but "had drunk" as in the past participle of "to drink".

It was not alcoholic wine - the Greek word used (oinos) means grape product, and is used of anything made from grapes, including raisins. How can we know what grape product is being referred to? By the context.
1) The grape product Jesus made was called better; to those of that time, that meant sweeter, and not fermenting or starting to turn to vinegar.
2) It would have been sinful for Jesus to have given alcohol to those people (Habbakuk 2:15).
Homemade 'wine' normally has a low alcohol content because the alcohol kills the yeast at a relatively low concentration; for higher "proof" alcohol, one must distill it.
And before anybody even makes the charge, the people of that time were fully capable of preserving grape juice without fermentation, either by boiling the juice into a paste and then reconstituting it (similar to modern Kool-Aid), or by sealing it in a pot called an amphora and letting it remain in the bottom of a lake where the cold would kill the yeast.

Jesus loves you. His wine doesn't give you a hangover. Also His wine is the best wine. It is called new wine. You pour new wine in new wine skins.
Do not drink wine in excess. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit. Having praise songs in your heart, loving one another.
1. His mother asked Him to.
2. They think the alcohol level was lower back then.
3. Personal studies.
4. No.
5. No.
6. No one ever told me He turned the water into grape juice. He turned it into the best wine.
7. Some people have strick religious rules regarding drinking any alcohol. Usually it is because they have personally seen the harm drunkedness can do. Their faith is weak in this area & others should respect that.
I thank my Saviour for the best wine.
Thanks to "the man" for His answer. That is more insight for me.

You should do some research before making stupid comments like that. Times then are much different than times now. Nobody ever said that alcohol was bad. In fact, the Bible said that wine can lift the spirits. It's not drinking alcohol, it's drinking to excess that is bad. I think you are just looking at ways to cast stones at Christians and their beliefs, but what you don't realize is that by doing so and being so ignorant yourself, you are actually helping to fortify the Christian resolve to 'teach' you. Believe what you want, I don't care. Christians, Muslims, or whatever can believe what they want, I don't care? I don't profess to have all the answers, as NOT ONE MAN can, but I also don't judge others for their beliefs. Religious beliefs have been around since the beginning of time, so do you really think you're going to change that. Foolish, foolish fool.

In the Bible it says that they only took as much wine as they needed. They didnt abuse it. Wine was like pop to us now. They were out of wine at the wedding so Jesus made some. I believe it was Abraham who got drunk and it was a sin, but Jesus had wine at the last supper. It was just used back then instead of pop.

Everyone likes a good kegger. The alcohol HAD to be strong to keep bacteria out. They don't know what they are talking about. The water was undrinkable, and wine was all you had to go on for that reason. I think Jesus was endorsing drinking, so party on.

They ran out of wine at the wedding and Jesus saved the day. Actually, the wedding at Cana is really a parable meaning its not true. It's meant to show that Jesus himself was the best wine left until the end of the wedding between God and his people.

because his mother told him to.
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." (And) Jesus said to her, "Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come."His mother said to the servers, "Do whatever he tells you."
Gospel of John chapter two vs 1-5.
Don't you love it. She nags him, he says I'm not gonna do it and she gets the waiters ready.
