Come face to face with fear. Avoiding your fear will prevent you from overcoming it. Instead,Desired control can be achieved through a process call exposure treatment, in which you expose your self to the object of your fears little by little and learn that what you imagine and expect to happen does not actually occur. Such graduated exposure can help you get use to do it, For example let's say you phobia is spiders. In exposure treatment training you may start to face your fear, usually in the presence of another person, by looking at picture of spiders, then a live spider, When you learn to handle this, you may move on to looking at a dead spider, then a live spider and you may even progress to holding one in your hand, Each time you may still feel some fear, but you learn by such exposure that the awful thing you dread do not actually occur

relaxation techniques, master them
Then thru gradual exposures, use those techniques to tame your fears until you experience the entire situation completely
Use a guide to help you, imitating modelled behavior is also effective once you've reached this stage

For example: Arachnophobia
Imagine a spider - relax
once you've become comfortable w/ the mental image of a spider, then move up
Picture of a spider - relax
comfortable
Move of a spider - relax
etc....

make sure you are completely comfortable w/ each stage before advancing, otherwise, phobia will never be extinguished
Eventually, you should be able to face your fear thru exposures (use a guide if necessary)

*note: nothin happens over night, some phobias may be conquered in a week, month, some not for yrs. Don't be discouraged

Visualizing positive things, breathing deeply, watch or listen to only things that are funny or mood lifters, stay away from news channels,we are being over dosed on negative and real world violence and an already depressed, anxiety ridden person doesn't need any extra. And besides talking to a professional medications maybe needed.

heights and falling have been my fears for years, and the way i cope with them is to not put myself in the position. stairs, escalators, ladders, i avoid them all. i don't think that's coping, though, just avoiding it.
