People in power tend to corrupt easily. It is like the power isn't enough, but they want more power and will do anything to keep it. They also begin to feel they are the law and can do anything they want and get away with it. Have you ever driven in a car with someone and this nice person honks and cusses and speeds? They change because they have the power of the automobile and they are in control (in power). Well, this happens on a much grander scale and people become blinded by the power and do some terrible things. If you don't have power, what can you actually do? Not much....no one needs you for favors so you don't have temptations. Your opinion or decisions don't affect others. Power corrupts because people change usually for the worse because the power itself is blinding them to what is right and just.

The arrogance of office. One can compare Clinton, who probably thought he was smarter and more entitled than others (and who, anyway, only corrupted the moral image (or myth) and didn't damage the Commonweal) and Nixon, probably equally smart but too arrogant and dismissive of "the enemy" or "the other" to shrink from Watergage crimes.

Then there was Spiro Angnew: corrupt from the get-go: he just thought he'd never get caught; and that if he was that the powers above him wouldn't let him be fried.

For obvious reasons second terms (of presidents) and any long-term tenure in Congress has a tendency to corrupt. Teams of acolytes shield the Great Man (or Woman) from reality. Why else would Lieberman have stuck with the Iraq War (Sure, he's pro-Israel and perhaps shares the myth that the war is good for Israel. But if someone had only told him both he and the war are naked . . .)

The same is true when a single party controls power (city, state, country) for too long. Vested interests get even more vested. And expensive. Think Enron: even a lot of money was not enough.

I can't get the link to show, but I can gather from the web address what it's about.

People are usually corrupted in order to ever be in positions of power in the first place. The egg came before the chicken, which is exactly why the two-party system is the Lie that is strangling America.

A person almost always comes into power with the prerequisite Initiation Ceremonies/ Hazings, which are nothing short of influence-peddling in return for campaign funds. If by chance a candidate with integrity happens to run on his or her own merit, and manages to hurdle this first gate, he or she will be attacked in deceitful campaign smears, which are nearly impossible to overcome without the money to defend yourself in your own campaign ads. Where do you get that money? And where do you get it the next time and the time after that? And if your secret contributor(s) want to blackmail you politically, do you come clean by smearing yourself along with them, or do you keep your mouth shut and become a slave to them forever?

No matter which comes first, the chicken and the egg always intersect at some point. And it doesn't get any better as the candidate climbs the ladder of what passes for "success."

Once again, the two-party system is the Lie that is strangling America. I'll bet somebody had a mountain of dirt on Dumbya in 2000 and shortly after the "election." But not nearly as much as they have on him now. That first was like a pebble-pile in a sandbox. This new one is more like the Himalayas.

I was happy to see your indymedia link. Do you happen to know my friend Marco? He was my best friend in a gonzo newsgroup when I lost touch for the last few years. I'd really like to "see" him again.

I won't bother with your link. No offense.

The essence of power often corrupts. The desire for power often suggests greed. Certainly one can define power in levels, or intensity, and not strictly want power for a self serving purpose, but you might notice, at least on its highest levels, those who have the powers want to keep them, and most definitely benefit from them.

Corrupt also can have levels,,,as defined, not the least of which might be a small child taking some candy from a bin in a grocery market. If you equate corruption to morality, or the lack of it, then all corruption, greed, and the desires for those,,,, are wrong.

I suggest that you take a deep breath, analyze how you define power and corruption, do some introspection to see if you fit into any categories, not stress over others who do, who you cannot "control" and get on with a life that accepts that there are things in LIFE that don't always agree with you.

People with power are privileged and take the pro-offered perks for granted. They expect and come to feel that the good things in life are theirs for the taking. The drive that put them where they are has no room for compassion or humanitarian sentiment.
Once they feel above the ordinary, mortal man and feel that they are free of the moral constraints that govern the lesser people in society, the payback that they get from corruption is just an additional benefit. Their arrogance and amoral attitude tell them that they they deserve a reward just for being in the position they are in and that they are above the law in exercising their prerogatives.
There should be a greater and more energetic law enforcement system free from their influence that would gut these bastards.

Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

COPS are extremely vulnerable to this, expecially when they are on crack or performance-enhancing drugs.
