I had a severe allergy on Thursday and ended up in A&E with Steroids and Piriton being injected. I think it was due to the Strawberries I had just eaten, but after doing a bit of research online, I have also seen that Ibuprofen can cause similar symptoms. I took 2 Ibuprofen a couple of hours before for my shoulder pain. To the best of my knowledge, I have no other allergies except for Tree Pollen Hayfever in the Spring, and my research shows that there can be a link. Can anybody give me anymore information/good website so that I can continue researching.

I am visiting my doctor on Monday to discuss with her but I would like to have as much info as possible beforehand.

I love strawberries!!!! Ibuprofen I can always do without.

I had a reaction about a month ago as well. Just after eating Strawberries and Cream but I put it down to the Fish Finger sandwich I had also had which didn't taste quite right so I had thrown it away. That time though, my reaction was red face and ears, pain in stomach and vomiting (in technicolour). As soon as I had been sick I started to feel much better.

This time, I was still eating them when I started to go beetroot colour. My finger were itching, I assume from preparing them. I had a heat wave and I was covered from head to foot in red dots withing a couple of minutes. Bloody frightening I can tell you!

I knew it would be the strawberries but thanks for the opinion.

Usually a body reacts within minutes to something you are allergic to rather than a couple of hours, strawberries are well known as allergens and if I was in your position I would be looking at them being the more likely culprit. I was told that anyone can becaome allergic to anything at anytime, so if you ahve previously eaten strawberries with no problems, it could still be the case they are to blame!

It could be either or both. Strawberries are wellknown as allergens. Ibuprofen (related to aspirin) is also known to cause an allergic reaction, in particular skin rashes and asthma. Allergic reactions to anything is usually after the second time the body has had contact with it. The first time the immune system doesnt react, it prepares and builds up an attack in preparation for the next time you eat for example, strawberries. Also some foods react badly to certain drugs which wouldnt be a true allergy but an conflict or incompatibility between two different chemicals (whether biological or manufactured). Therefore I suggest you ask for a complete allergy test to find out if there are other things you could be allergic to and to confirm if you are allergic to the stuff you already suspect.

One of our daughters had eaten strawberries all of her short life and then one day when she was 13 she had an allergic reaction. Her joints in her hands all swelled up and she was in pain for several days. She had eaten quite a few strawberries. She has avoided strawberries since and then one day she had a sip of a friends smoothie, not realizing there was strawberry in it and within a few minutes her throat swelled up and she had the pain in her joints again. It passed in time with no medication needed but we see that strawberries can definitely cause significant allergic reaction in sensitive individuals.
