'But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.’
Timing is very different for God and for us - Since he existed before time began, he is outside the boundaries of what we know as 'time' - he is timeless, able to step in and out of what we view as time. For him, the 'days' in creation could have been instantaneous, or longer, or anything at all.

God is not subject to time. Time was created for man and the earth was created for man and then God said to man ( Adem) in Genesis 1:28 "Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth," also to subdue and have dominion. This all takes time. Read 1 Timothy 1-6. verse 4 says " Who (meaning God) will have ALL MEN to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. I wish it didn't take so long either but men like sheep can be a little dumb. I'm smilling.

11 Peter 3:8 KJV A day is a thousand years and a thousand years as one day. This means God has no time limit. Jesus died two thousand years ago, but to God it was only 2 days ago.

Jesus is not just waiting for heaven to be done. His timing has more to do with other factors like who has had a chance to hear about him and remember 1000 years is but a twinkling in the eye to G-d.
G-d created time for us, not him.

Your answer is in the old testament. There is some question about whether the six days were our days or Gods own calander.
