This is the answer. If yours differs very much, it is wrong.
God is responsible for the survival of the human race. We're not here alone, you know. We will "survive" until the last day of the Tribulation and then some of us will become a different race (long story). No disease, famine, war, pollution, etc., is going to wipe us out. To believe that is arrogance.

The question is broad and maybe no succinct answer can be developed at this time. There are too many variables to pinpoint any single solution as the contradictions in human nature will see to that.
However (you knew it was coming), we have a modicum of influence on the weather, and the way we're abusing the atmosphere, the so-called greenhouse effect will make life uncomfortable if we keep up the way we're going and doing things.
Also the dire threat of nuclear war is a consideration. Those hot farts popping all over the world will send radiation encircling the globe several times over.
Human Beings. It is we who have to change for our own survival.
If by the end of this century there's less then one-billion people left, it will be our own fault.

Basically, it's not ours to worry about the fate of the whole human race, because it's all in the hands of God anyway. But we can learn to love and care for one another, to show compassion for those in need and tolerance for those who are different. Those things together might not increase the number of years we live, but it would surely make the years we have better.
I think Mr. Hawking's question was asked from his own, liberal perspective, more concerned with things over which we really have no control as individuals except through individual action. I seem to remember him saying, in fact, that he was not looking for any one, right, answer, because he knew there was no "right" answer; he just wanted to start a dialogue, which he obviously did judging from the number of answers.
Anyway, I agree with you that the answer is simple, I just think the question is misconceived.
Love is the greatest gift God has bestowed on humanity, just as the Apostle Paul said. We need to spread it around a little more, and in doing so will solve any problem we might face.

The only way to survive anything including the next 100 years is to believe in Jesus Christ for even if your body dies your soul goes to heaven and when He returns your old body will be perfected and risen to live an eternity with the Lord.
If you believe you have a better answer why not put it in the form of a question?

I wonder about that sometimes too. I think the best answer comes in the form of a Barbra Streisand song. I don't know the title of the song, but lyrics say something about 'people needing people' and something about the 'luckiest people.'
