LEGAL foreign workers

I have been a professional recruiter for over 10 years. There are still some instances where foreign workers are being discriminated against purely for the fact that they are foreign, but these get rarer each year.

In my experience, what usually causes a foreign worker to not get a job are things like their inability to communicate in English, lack of work experience (or experience that is not easily verified), and immigration status.

English is the language of the workplace and those who speak it well are much more likely to get a job. If I cannot understand a candidate, I have to assume most of their potential co-workers will not be able to either. In most work places, the inability to communicate can be frustrating. In some, it can be dangerous.

Many foreign candidates come to the US for undergraduate or graduate school before they get any real world experience. For those who do, tracking down a reference from a company in India or Chinia is very difficult compared to talking to a company just down the block.

Finally, immigration status is a big pain. Depending on the visa, the candidate may have anywhere from 1-6 years to work in the US before they either have to go home or apply for permanent residency. Plus, it usually involves getting an immigration attorney involved when hiring an alien just to be sure all of the legal requirements are being met which, in turn, puts more of a burden on the HR department to keep track of these things. So it just costs more in time and money to hire an alien than a person who is a citizen or permanent resident.

I am a minority of one in a city of about 30,000 people and if they discriminate, God, I couldn't stand them if they loved me. I am white and I live in China and work here. My Chinese co-workers are so good to me that I am given chocolates (American), cases of beer, cigarettes, souvenirs from every part of the country, treated to dinners, (More invitations than I can accept) and am part of their families. Yes, I made efforts to be accepted but you must do that if you are in a foreign country. Chinese is npt an easy language but I gained much from doing a bit to appreciate their country. In China, many places have never seen a white person before...now no one stares at me, and even the dogs simply scratch another flea bite....that's how you must fit in.

Let me tell you who's being discrimintated against. I am a middle class single white woman, I have two children, I have worked hard since I was fifteen, before that babysat for money. I put myself through college, and I now have a successful career as a professional in the workforce.

A few years ago, I went to enroll my son in a PUBLIC preschool that MY tax dollars are funding. He needed to socialize a little more with kids his age before getting into kindergarten and I viewed this as the best logical step. I always did everything I could to keep him out of daycare because most of them charge outrageous rates because the state subsidized parents can afford to pay those rates with MY tax dollars.

I was told that because my son was not a "Non-English Speaking Minority" That he had to wait to be placed in this public preschool which was a part of our public school system IN the elementary building WITH all the other kids my tax dollars are putting through school.

Tell me.... All of these foreign workers recieve free health care, free housing, free cars, free food, free child care, free money and my tax dollars are paying for it. Meanwhile, I have to bust my *** to earn it, nobody offers any help and in fact, they are throwing roadblocks in the path of my children's future success because we are WHITE.

What about for Americans who are discriminated against because the cheaper hourly workers don't speak English so employers are reluctant to hire people who don't speak Spanish?

Are you meaning foreign workers who come here through legal means or do you mean those who cross our borders illegally?
