Love, affection, compromise, communication, friendship, trust, and loyalty. Choosing a life partner is all of those and much more. At the end of the day you are preparing to spend the rest of your life with them.

There's a million different things - love, trust, laughter, ideals that are pretty much the same, enjoying each other's company even when you're silent, fun - loads more.
I think the essential thing though is that when a relationship is right, it's one that enhances your life. It brings more things to your life, and makes you a better person.

Totally relative...
I used to think I knew my type... tall (very tall), blonde hair blue eyes... then I met my fiance... just a few inches taller than me, dark hair, beautiful eyes that he gets from the Korean part of his background and then I knew that my type was him!
