Please read the following, from the Quran, before you answer the question.
[4:129] You can never be equitable in dealing with more than one wife, no matter how hard you try. Therefore, do not be so biased as to leave one of them hanging (neither enjoying marriage, nor left to marry someone else). If you correct this situation and maintain righteousness, GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful.
[4:3] If you deem it best for the orphans, you may marry their mothers - you may marry two, three, or four. If you fear lest you become unfair, then you shall be content with only one, or with what you already have. Additionally, you are thus more likely to avoid financial hardship.

Because they dont KNOW their own religion
Because they follow CULTURAL rules not their own religion's rules
Because they PURPOSELY IGNORE the pre-conditions, in order to please themselves, taking Allah's beneficience yet not following His rules that go with His gift.
E.g. Nick says to Aaliyah, you can borrow my car as long as you take care of it and dont go over 60mph.....There are pre-conditions but whether Aaliyah applies any of them is subject to lots of factors....How much respect Aaliyah has for Nick (similarly how much respect any particular Muslim man has for Allah)....What Aaliyah's own desire is -maybe she wants to go over 60mph and doesnt want to follow the rules- (similarly a Muslim man may want four wives and may know he cannot provide for them all financially but he marries them anyway).
Its a good question but you know the answer is that some Muslim men want the benfit without adhering to the rules. The majority of men who have four wives and whom you may have seen treat them inequitably are usually those who follow culture. E.g in Saudi Arabia it is permissable by the laws of the country to marry up to 4 wives....but how many of them know the pre-conditions or follow them? Not ALL of them follow the rules set by Allah. On the Day of Judgement, they will know the pre-conditions when Allah reminds them and they will regret that they took Allah's favours but ignored His rules about them.

I am not a Muslim but some of my friends are! Man can marry mor than one woman but only under certain conditions, such as, each wife should have her own home, not one wife should have more than another, from material things to husband's attention etc. And as Muslim men do look after their wife (ves), pay all bills, give all their money for their spouse, children etc ... It's the reason why only a very few actually have more than one wife.
It is not something i would like my partner to do! Because of my upbringing, you know! different cultures, different lifestyles!
You know i may be a bore but i actually believe that there is only one God who couldn't give a toss which religion we belong to, how we practice, what we do/don't do. Because he gave us free choice and was never either a Muslim/Protestant/Catholci or anything! He was as he is today God and God is good and God is love why we should call Him God, Allah or whatever!

They think such in a very complacant way.
The 'rule' they claim is not originating from Islam but from ancient tribal rules created by the tough conditions of life in the deserts.
One may admit, that the Quran does not set legal preconditions to polygamy, but it gives moral advice about this point, advice which comes close to christian ethics and modern western ideas about gender partnership on the base of equal right. (See first answer which would have been part of my answer if it wouldn't have been given yet).
One must consider that conditions of life influence the ideas of morals and of gender relationships. Globalized business life is much different from Mohammed's life conditions in the 7th century a.C.
The Prophet himself did not marry aother woman as long as he was married with his first wife, Khadidja, a rich business woman and caravan owner, probably of christian religion. Kadidja was 15 years older than Mohammed and it is reported they had a very happy marriage and were tied together by a very deep going love. Fatima was the first Daughter born from this marriage.

i guess urs is a request more than a question...God has asked men, or actually advised men to marry one wife as it minimises the chances of him being unjust. The verses clearly convey this message...However, marrying more than one is permitted, and this is also a beauty of islam. there are many social issues that can be addressed, as that of widows of soldiers of war, or any reason for that matter...
When Allah Himself knows the best of the ways, why not men follow it responsibly. However, i know of a few families where you may witness one of the most wonderful and peaceful atmospheres and coincidently, the man has more than one wife...its just that ppl. of some parts of the world just cant accept a man having more than one wife, while happily following the "one wife, ten mistresses" lifestyle...

Christians could have more that one as well....
Actually they could have up to 500-600 at least.
Didn't Jesus said that "he didn't come to abolish but to complete the law"?
Christians accept the Old Testament because it is part of the law. In "KINGS I. 11:3" we have that King Solomon had 700 wives and 300 Cocubines,
I can't see why muslims have to get any blaim for preconditions or not for polygamy?
The question goes..."why christians have given up of polygamy unconditionally"...

The thing is, polygamy existed before islam; islam didn't bring polygamy, it only put limit on the existing polygamy by saying that a man cannot mary more than 4 wifes.

islam limited polygamy with strict regulations: man cant have another wife unless his wife was unable to give children or has an illness that prevent her of fullfilling her duties as a wife., he can marry another one to have children without having to divorce his first wife and ruining the relationship..but that doesnt mean that he must marry others if he was among these cases...its optional
second, if u cant be fair with ur wifes in love or money or care u are sinned .....and ur marriage is illegal......
this was allowed to men because of their sexual nature ......unlike women who tend to keep one partner.....

Polygamy is allowed in my religion too.
It's called: religion is a survival trait to better help early man survive a tough world.
We are smarter than this and eventually religion will be dead
