The best way to learn is to get a teacher. It's next to impossible to learn piano without being shown how to play it by someone who can relate things directly to you, websites can never do that, and I think they're a rip off. You can probably find a teacher in your area by searching on the internet, or in a local advertisement magazine.

If you want something to get on with before you find a teacher then your time would be better spent learning to read music (both treble and bass cleff), there should be some websites out there to help you do that for free.

I've been playing the piano ever since I was a child and I know it's always better if you get a teacher. However, before you join a class, you can learn more about the piano at these websites. Knowing a few things beforehand is always very helpful.

You need a piano teacher. Listen to the teacher play and see if you would like to play like them. Reading music is hard note for note. I tool lessons every Saturday for a hour or so ad as a kid.
I did not get the hang of the piano and went for the flute and clarinet as my favorite instrument, O piano is not for everyone.
Basis of all instruments is the piano for tone and pitch.
Piano can be taught by numbers instead of notes also.
Jamie Foxx taught himself it is said. Do not think the websites are all wrong. They are in this for the money. Some piano players will teach for cheap. My lessons were $20.00 or so but I can not use them today. Good Luck

You should get a teacher, but just learn basic fingering, scales, simple pieces. You can buy prep. grade teaching books.
