Miracle's won't tell you either, if it were POSSIBLE, the very Elect (Children of GOD) would be Deceived. satan can do miracle's too, FALSE MIRACLE's.
Now, how ya gonna tell?
Spirit beareth Witness unto Spirit.
Deep call's out to Deep.
Sometime's REAL Prophet's Miss-it.
JESUS was the ONLY ONE WHO could say, the Devil dosen't have anything in ME.
1. Try the Spirit's first. To make sure the Prophet is of GOD.
2. Take what the Prophet say's back to the Word of GOD to make sure it Agree's.
3. On Personal Prophycies, Pray to GOD, make sure there not against the Word of GOD, GOD will confirm what HE tell's you through a Prophet ( HIS WORD to you Personally) with 2 or more Witness's.
If a REAL Prophet of GOD misse's it, forgive him and PRAY for him so that he will get better at it.
We mess up, GOD dosen't ever mess-up.
The devil's are down here trying to mess thing's up.
Make sure it's What GOD Said.
The HOLY SPIRIT live's in us and sometime's YOU just KNOW that you know what the Prophet said was from GOD.
Hope this helps.

Miracles and prophesies be not considered. It is the prophetic teachings--the message delivered, the exemplary life lived. A person asks to be obeyed VS a person who asks the Divine to be obeyed makes the difference between a non- prophet and a prophet. Prophets are highly exalted humans chosen by His Grace. As human, they can commit a sin, but, they do not commit even a lapse by will. If by a human error of judgement a lapse is there, it is promptly followed by a repentence to Him. A prophet does not have to 'succeed'(The Christ and Moses did not), he has to excel in his endeavours to deliver the Message. The message, common to all Messengers is: The belief in One Unique Deity and in The Life after life. The beliefs following this perennial, premodial truth is like believing in all Angels, all Messages, all the Holy Books, all the virtues. All the Holy Prophets have taught us to seek refuge in The Supreme Name from the guiles of Satan. The Name was definitely revealed to the listeners in the language of the audience. So, translations shall not be as effective. Hallowed be Thy Name ! What is 'The Name'? In Arabic Bible:Allah,in Persian and Urdu Bibles Khuda/Khudavand,In Hindi 'Prabhu', in Catholics 'Yahweh',in nonEnglish European Bibles it may not be the stressed upon word:'God' ! Yellow Races have their own Name. So, no one Name may pl. be disrespected.

Prophets don't always work miracles. Their main "job" is as messengers.
Prophets have a connection to what most people call God, and they learn important things about life from this source. They communicate these things to others.
In old times they used to proclaim their truths in the streets, to anyone. Nowadays they more commonly write, and they might also talk to people outside their daily contacts.
A real prophet's message tells people what they're doing wrong and how to become better. This message might contain references to God, society/government, religion, the future, or understanding.
As an example of a prophet, Jesus' first message was, "The time has been fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has drawn near. Repent, and believe the good news." (Greek: "Oti pepleootai ho kairos, kai engiken he basileia tou theou. Metanoeite, kai pisteuete en to euangelio.") (Mark 1:15)
The word translated "repent" is a combination of two Greek words, "meta" ("with") and "noeite" ("understanding"). Thus Jesus was calling people to understand what he was proclaiming: the "good news" that "the kingdom of God has drawn near".
Classic prophetic stuff there.

He would be the one that everyone would be calling insane.
I am not trying to be funny.
The bible verse that speaks most directly to this idea refers to a small
still voice. I think that this is the best reference that I can give you to
help you to understand what I am saying here. I think it can be
found somewhere around Kings 19:11-12
There is a popular perception that God talked to every other shepherd and
goat herder in the old days but He is suddenly no longer interested in
talking to anyone anymore. This is yet another invention of the Catholic
Church. Their doctrine says that they are the sole intermediaries between
God and humankind. Essentially their teaching is, God has no time for
anybody like you. If he has anything to say he will tell us important
people. If we have the time, we will pass it on to you.
You need to ask your self a few of questions about this idea.
Is this really how God historically operated?
If he is not interested in talking to us anymore then why not?
If he is, why aren't more people hearing him?
Many faiths believe in some form of personal revelation, as a part of their
doctrine. For the most part this is used as the butt of a lot of good jokes,
like if you talk to God you are praying, if God talks to you you're
schizophrenic. Main stream religion frowns on this idea of personal
revelation and tries to scare people away from believing in it with stories
about demons contacting gullible souls.
What this leaves us with is a situation where should God actually listen to
the prayers of a devout believer and answer them with an actual revelatory
response, we have no available definition for this situation other than
mental illness or demonic interaction. Little wonder people who are actually
experiencing this these days don't say too much about it.
Love and blessings

Some of us in this world are prophets. For e.g. A mom is a prophet. She leads us away from evil and protects us at all costs.

It's true, most would reject a Prophet.
If s/he fulfills prophecy, that's one good way of recognizing him/her. I say "her" because although I've never heard of a female Prophet of God, there isn't anything that could prevent that from happening if God so chooses.

Prophets tell us things we aren't ready to hear. If I were to hear someone say in a public forum, "We cannot win in Iraq, we must get out now," I would consider him/her a prophet.

Good question!
The miracles are not necessarily a sign of a prophet. The majority of the prophets in the Bible never performed a miracle.
Perhaps the following Bible verses will help you to understand a true prophet. There are several tests mentioned and a prophet must meet ALL the tests. It is not good enough to meet 1 or 2 of them.
Numbers 12: 6. And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.
EVERYTHING THEY SAY WILL COME TO PASS - The biggest problem with this is sometimes it may not be in our lifetime.
Deut. 18:21. And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the Lord hath not spoken?
22. When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
THEY WILL ALWAYS POINT US TO GOD. They will never do it for a their popularity or attention. Everyword from their mouth will direct us to God.
Deut. 13:
1. If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, and
2. And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;
3. Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
4. Ye shall walk after the Lord your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.
THEIR ENTIRE LIFE WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERGO SCRUTINY. THEY WILL NOT WAVER OR TRY TO SOFTEN THE WORDS TO BE POLITICALLY CORRECT.
Matthew 7:15. Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
17. Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
20. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
We must also pray for the Spirit of discernment. We have to know the entire word of God before we can know if what we are hearing is truly a message from God.
Let us make sure we are not believing something simply because the majority of the people believe it or it is what we want to hear to make us feel better.
2 Timothy 4: 2. Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4. And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
Remember historically - biblically - most prophets were not popular and accepted in their own times or by their own people.
Hope this helps some and doesn't add to your questions regarding prophets.
