You will find that the type one motor will be more versatile and easier to rebuild. The parts are cheaper and easier to find. There are not any advantages of one over the other except for that. The engine is what you make it. You can do just about anything with a type 1 motor. Also the type one is the correct motor for your beetle, why not put the motor in that is supposed to be in there.

I have seen a type one 1600 built to 2332cc w/turbo and nitrous on the street putting out over 550 hp. All ACVW built engines are based on the 1600cc block.

Really you should compare them by block numbers and not by there type. Basically each series of motors had there own features and improvements over the years. And while you should really ask someone that has a lot of experience with rebuilding motors(maybe the are more specific differences) which one is better, personnel it looks like there about basically the same motor. So, since they are about the same and I'm guessing both in the same shape(if not rebuild the better of the 2) I'd rebuild the beetle motor since that's what your going to be running it in. Hope that makes since still early.

From what i can tell a tpye 1 is a bug engine and type 3 fast/squareback.
