first of all, do not switch to a low calorie or "diet food" unless you are on a high quality food like Innova, Wellness, Solid gold, etc. If you are currently feeding Iams, Science diet, pedigree, Purina, Royal Canin, Eukanuba, etc. these foods are garbage to begin with and the diet formulas are even worse.

The best tactic is to feed your dog a bit less food. Because the majority of pet foods use more fillers in their diet foods, the dogs will lack the beneficial nutrition from a regular diet. While cutting back, if you dog seems hungray, so as the other postings suggest and feed vegetables. ESPECIALLY pumpkin. Pumpkin is low in calories but packed with essential vitamins and minerals. And as an added bonus it fills the dogs up so they aren't as hungray.

Another key factor is exercise. Dogs require daily exercise as do humans. Taking your dog for a walk is the best way to do both.

Good luck

Any dog food made by Nutro is the best because they use no fillers like beaks, feet, hair,scales,tails....they use only the part of the animal that a human would eat. Everything is all natural and they put in vitamins that will help your dog stay healthy while losing weight. Read the label, the first ingredient is always some sort of animal. Some diet dog foods (Science Diet) uses corn as the main ingredient. Dogs are carivores! They won't be satisfied with corn. I've used Nutro light and other varieties in their line and have been highly satisfied.

Don't ask a vet. They only received a few hours training in nutrition when they were in school. Since they sell Science Diet, they'll tell you that it is best. It's not!
Go read the dog food labels at the pet store. The best food starts with meat as the first ingredient, not corn.

There are many different recommendations on what diet is best for dogs. Some people argue that commercial dog foods contain additives or poor-quality meat or ingredients dogs should not ingest, or that certain commercial foods are not nutritionally sufficient for their dogs. Different homemade diets are recommended by various experts, from "natural" diets consisting primarily of raw meat, to vegetarian diets consisting only of nutritionally balanced vegetarian ingredients, to mixtures consisting of ingredients such as brown rice, brown pasta, meats, eggs, and vegetables.

Most dogs willingly eat vegetables, particularly if they are cooked, and many kinds of fruit, although grapes, avocados, and raisins are toxic to dogs.

The vet told us that feeding your dog vegetables (people food) canned green beans, bananas, any fresh or canned or cooked vegetables are good. You can mix with a small portion of dry dog food.

My dogs love Purina Fit & Trim. My vet says its as good as the expensive ones. I also make sure they get at least 20 mins of walking in a day.
