My daughter's doctors are the best doctors in the world. I know that because she is still alive! Our pediatrician saw some weird labs on her when she was 10 days old, didn't know how to interpret them, so he put us in an ambulance and transferred her miles away where there would be someone who might know where to start. Respiratory failure set in a few days later, and if she had not already been at that hospital with the team of doctors she had, she would not have survived. She was in the ICU for a month and had wonderful doctors and specialists there who frantically worked together to try to diagnose her problem (interstitial lung disease as it turned out) and develop a treatment strategy that would work. And when our home town pediatrician saw on his report weeks later that a lung biopsy had been done, he drove all the way to the other hospital to visit her on his own time just because he was concerned. In my opinion, a good doctor is both the doctor who has all the answers and the doctor who knows and cares enough to admit when he doesn't.

I use to think the one with a good bed side manner was a good doctor but since she almost killed my son I found it not to be so. When your doctor charges for after hour calls and snaps your head off if you call them run as fast as you can. You can be a doctor with C's does not make you a good one. Small town doctors are either their because they were raised there or the big hospitals would not take them for a reason. Mostly the good doctor is professional and personable that you feel free to tell everything. Search the web you can find out where they went to school and if they have been sued.

There are a few rather important criteria that determine the true "goodness" of a doctor, and some are tough to measure. One of the simplest ones is competence: you should always look into a physician's education, credentials, and experience. Attitude is also important: how does (s)he interact with patients? Is (s)he friendly, compassionate, concerned, willing to answer any questions a patient might ask, even if the answer is "I don't know"? (Admission of this--and the ability to know how to do something about it--is a true hallmark of a decent physician.) Is (s)he willing to take risks if necessary without being too much a "maverick" who's reckless with patients' well-being?

A relatively simple way to determine who might be a good doctor is to ask around...ask people you know and trust if they've had experience with any physicians who practice the specialty you're looking for. Usually people are brutally honest about bad experiences and appreciative of good ones. If a situation is not catastrophically life-threatening, it's wise to do research. Oftentimes it's not a mere coincidence that a particular physician has a busy practice...if they're good, word tends to spread.

A good doctor is one that will listen to you and come up with a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. The treatment plan will work. The hallmark though is a doctor admitting they don't know something and will seek an opinion. If a person knows what they don't know, they will be good at whatever they do.

I am the best doctor I know, but there are a few just slightly down from me. I haven't had a patient die from athelete's foot in months and my last patient with a splinter in his toe was in a body cast for only five months. Seriously, I am a physician, but I suggest you go to a good general practioner first, and let him decide if the problem needs further attention from a specialist.

Someone who cares and listens to all your concerns, answers all your questions, gives suggestions, and prescribes all the right medicines for your illness and who orders follow-ups when needed. Someone who treats you good.

I think one who listens, tries hard to keep you healthy, is able to admit he/she doesn't know everything and refers you to a Specialist when needed!
