I have been told that Calico's are crazy felines, and black cats are sneaky and like to lurk in the shadows.

My calico girl's are indeed a trifle crazy ( in a good way though) and I have a black female who thinks the bedroom closet is her den and that is where she spends the most time. Sometimes I think she is going feral in there.

So what do you all think??? Can one indeed predict a cat's temperment by it's color???

Well there is something to the type and color of cat to determine it's personality, but it's not an exact science. A cat's personality is determined by the cat. I have three adult males and each one has it's own personality. However, it does seem that the orange cat more commonly will have a braver personality. Gray cats are sometimes a bit weirder than other cats. They bite more easily and seem to be a bit more aggressive. That's how my 9 year old Louie is, got him 9 years ago, and he was very aggressive, once ran up the arm of the chair to bite my nose. He learned real fast that was not the thing to do, and never did it again. But he turns on people fast. My husband told me not to get a gray cat cuz they are weird, but I didn't listen.
I have a Siamese Himalayan that is a sweetheart, but people are afraid of him because of the Siamese. He's a lover and that was his personality from the day I got him three years ago when he was a baby.
And we have a 10 month old orange cat, he is not afraid of anything, anyone, or any noise. He is brave, and I have had other orange cats that were just naturally brave.
See the personality of a kitten and that will determine its temperament more than anything else, but like I said, there really is something to the color theory.

I don't know if it specific to colour but more so to the breed. I have an orange tabby and was told by a few vets and pet professions that they are known for having some of the pets social personalities....which is definitely true for my cat. He loves to play and play fight with you. He's always chasing around and doing the mos hilarious stuff.

But on the other hand, he loves everyone and is the most affectionate cat I've met yet. he always has to sit in you lap or sleep on the bed with you. He's also very talkative.

If I were to get another cat, I would probably pick one of the same breed because he is just wonderful.

I have had more than a dozen cats in my adult life. I had never thought really about temperament and a correlation to color.

I have had one calico, and she was a bit 'out there'. Nasty to strangers but loving to me. I have had four torties, all lovers and very friendly to strangers. My grey tabbies display different behaviors...some timid, some outgoing. My newest acquisition, a 10 yr old orange tabby is my first of that color. So far, she seems affectionate and outgoing. My sister has a male orange tabby who I never see when I go to her house. He's very timid.

Great question. I'll start paying attention.

No, not really. But us humans do tend to associate black with sneaky/evil/things like that. And calico is such a bright, vivid variation of color that we tend to expect a bit of hyper-ness.

NO - this is a complete myth. Color is not linked to temperment in any way, its just a fluke or its like if people think their pet is going to behave a certain way through small actions the owners are not even aware of they create a pet who behaves in a certain way

it may just be that you heard this things so when your cat behaves that way you really notice it... but honestly its a myth

I don't think so, I have had 3 black cats in my life and none of them have been the type to lurk in the shadows. All are out going. He maybe hiding from the other cat if it is crazy or pestering him.

personal experience that ginger cats are psychotic have had many cats over the years and in that mix has been 6 different ginger cats and they all went nuts and became very vicious but other than that all the rest have been typical cats you know sleep all day play all night own all the furniture occasionally let people sit on the couch or even pet them...just typical cats

Old Wive's Tales. That's what you've heard.

The best way I ever heard of to "test" a cat's temperament is to take the kitten, and while you're holding it, turn it on it's back as if you're going to cradle it like a baby. If it's docile and allows you to do it (without thrashing and trying to flip back over), then you'll have a gentler cat.

I don't think you can predict it by color but sometimes by breeds. Certain breeds have been known to have certain temperments like the Siamese.

Yes, like siamese tend to be very vocal and tortoiseshell cats are opinionated.
