Reality. Alternative fuels already exist. Our current fuel dependency came about through improved refinement of crude oil and the internal combustion engine. But not all combustion engines use petroleum based fuels. These engines have been around for DECADES and are no new discovery. The fuels have just not been as practical or economical to use, YET. They have limitations.

The only MYTH is that big oil companies have crushed every alternative. There is not quick fix replacement for gasoline or diesel fuels, nor will there likely ever be one. Much as steam locomotive switched from wood to coal and later to oil for their fuels, automotives will need to make some changes to accomodate the new fuels, but only as they become affordable and widely available. The consumer really has more control in this global problem than we want to admit. In many ways its our fault, not some mythological business entity tricking us to use oil products.

New fuels are possible but consider the fact that we have been developing the infrastructure of our world around carbon based fuels for over 100 years. It isn't going to happen over night.

It takes 3 to 4 years to build a new ethanol plant of any reasonable capacity and longer for other technologies so just be patient. Once the market demand gets large enough companies will see that it is their best interest to spend money on these newer technologies. Just be patient and your grandchildren will be able to answer this one for you.

very much a reality, although the shift toward their mass use will be slow given the need for a new infrastructure to distribute and trade them. You can also think of new sources of fuel, like fuel extracted from crops ("bio-fuel") made from plants such as sugar beet...this already exists and is a very realistic alternative in the short term given that we would be capable of converting the existing engines to use this fuel.
