Just wondering, not trying to start any fights here. I just don't see how a person could claim Satanism as a religion, when really there's not really any worshipping going on.

True Satanists worship themselves and don't even believe in the myth of Satan. Anton LaVey chose that name simply to piss off Christians.

answer #1 explains it. it is just a way of being a good person without claiming there is a super being that you are in cahoots with.

And the name does freak out the holier than thou, as shown by the second post that feels the need to save you.

If you're using the traits of Christianity as the definition of a religion: that is, there is a being or set of beings whom you subject yourself to, repress your urges for, and who you regularly gather to reaffirm this on a communal level - then no, Satanism isn't a religion.

On the other hand, if you view religion as a framework and expression for exploration of the spirit, Satanism is a perfectly satisfying religion.

Unlike many Satanists, I do believe that there is an entity, force, or power, something indescribable beyond myself. I don't believe that I'm alone in this. Just peruse the myths of the world and you'll regularly find one figure whose function is to defy the gods, promote the survival of humanity, and spur our growth. There are gods who will never simply act on our behalf out of a sense that "they know what's best". They don't demand that we give up our intellectual curiosity, our willingness to question, or our desire to give form to our new understandings. Such gods promote exploration and rebel against tyrants.

I believe in this Prince of Darkness principle. The Christian Satan is just one presentation of His Majesty (and rather inadequate at that).

Satan will not save me from myself. He will not rid me of my responsibility for my actions. He does shock me into new perspectives, he mocks my inertia, he throws down the gauntlet and dares me to take it up. For that, I give him honor and respect, rather like that I offer to my ancestors for their guidance and the gifts of name and characteristics that they have passed on to me. I drink a toast to my god, I call him to witness my actions, I ask him to lend me his strength at times as a friend.

But you're right, I don't worship, but this is my religion.
