I'm learning Spanish in school and went to Salamanca (a town NW of Madrid) with my school during spring break this year. And it was amazing. I went to places like Madrid, Leon, Toledo, and Alberca, but Salamanca was still the best. The Spanish people are very friendy, even when your Spanish is abysmal, and very light-hearted. The food is great, and the culture is just full of flair and color. The atmosphere is so lively and upbeat, with dances like the flamenco and their music is so catchy and happy. There's also plenty of shopping, soccer/football games to see, museums to visit, and nightlife to experience. And the whole pickpocketing thing isn't as serious as they say, even in Madrid. It was one of the best trips I've ever had. I'm planning on going back to Salamanca next summer to study Spanish. It's just a two hour ride from Madrid, and I would definitely recommend a one day excursion to this quaint but lively town to those visiting Madrid, especially for those who love historic buildings and some nice bargain shopping (like me!). Viva Espana! :)

I love Spain.
It makes me wonder why all the people that complain about too many British being in Spain end up going on another package holiday to Greece or Turkey where they then seek out English bars and food.
If they really like Spain there are so many places that they can find the real Spain and real Spanish. Even in Benidorm there are loads of tapas bars around the Old Town, but I bet they never try them.
Barcelona is a great city.
Not sure what I think of Bull fighting, it is a great spectacle and a great tradition for the Spanish, but still rather sad and cruel. The bulls are only acting on their instincts, their vision is poor and they are so pumped up with testosterone that they can't stop and will inevitably die.
I try to learn Spanish, but the Spanish always either speak too quick, or prefer to speak to me in English as their English is so good, a bit fustrating. Then when you do learn Spanish you find out you have to then learn Catalan and Valenciano and more.

I love Spain, its culture and people. But a bit more could be done regarding animal rights. I do not agree with "corridas de toros (bull fights)." I have several Spanish friends but they are not really concern about animal issues. Am i wrong?

Zapatero(sp?) seems to have brought out the best in the Spanish. From my perspective, it looks as if the country wants to finally get rid of the illiberal legacy left to it by Franco, and is finally becoming the welcoming, warm-hearted nation that it really wants to be.
Plus it's the home of Pedro Almodovar, who is a real treasure!

Hot, sunny, lots of Brit holiday makers in Union Jack shorts ruining things for everyone, cocky local inhabitants that talk too fast, bullfighting, female dancers in black lacey clothing stamping the ground until their knees explode, Manuel from Fawlty Towers, Real Madrid, Barcelona (Barthelona if you're a newsreader), ETA, Paella, um...that's it. Adios!
