I'm going out for a Japanese meal tonight. Any advice on what to eat and why?

You sound like you're not used to Japanese food, so the person is right who said skip the sushi. (Unless you're adventurous, in which case try the tuna, avoid the squid. yick.) Besides anything teriyaki, which pretty much everybody likes, you could try the tempura, which is veggies and shrimp and fish fried in a fluffy batter that you dip in a broth-type sauce. If you're at a grill place, you'll be alright because they just grill your choice of meat and veggies and give you dipping sauces. Just watch out for the green paste - it's wasabi, which is very hot horseradish. I love it, but it's dangerous!

Ah, Japanese!! I lived there for eight years, I miss the food!!

If you can find it, yakisoba. Its a noodle dish with pork or chicken, bean sprouts, and horseradish. You can ask to omit the horseradish, it has a strong bite to it! Ramen is hard to go wrong with, a nice basic noodle soup. Dont be afriad to try the bamboo!

Teriakyi, of course, is a good place to start. And the grill should be pretty good. I haven't gone to a Japanese grill since coming back stateside, though, so I cant vouch for authenticity!

I doubt if youll get real authentic Japenaese food unless you go to somewhere like Japan town in San Francisco or some other big city the rest is going to be like Beni Hanas Americanized Japanese food.

if you don't like raw fish and sushi type things, i highly recommend japanese grill. especially anything with teryaki. mmmmm. and sticky rice. yes. especially if you put teryaki all over the sticky rice and then eat it.
