some religions and faiths believe that there is no physical contact until marriage. This includes, kissing, holding hands, and never being in a position of being alone so that temptation will not be upon you.
My niece and her husband were of this faith. (Bible Baptist Fundamentalist) She and he never once kissed, touched hands, hugged or anything until their wedding night 2 years ago. Call it strange.....but they did it out of personal conviction and religious upbringing. BOTH were virgins when they married!

in the bible it says that a woman should not be known to a man... we assume it means intercourse as that pretty much requires the removal of clothes and two bodies to be joined as one....
and it would require that a man "know" a woman to have been in that position with her...
