My boyfriend and I intend on going to New Zealand for about 3 weeks next Spring. We'd like to cover both islands but can't make up our minds between a coach tour and a self-drive package. We both drive so it wouldn't be just one person doing all the work. Just wondered if anyone had been on either type of tour and had opinions on what they thought were the pros and cons.

I would recommend self drive, gives you more freedom and the opportunity to stop when there is beautiful scenery, and there is lots of that.

It would also give you the opportunity to change plans of you get a tip from a local of a good place to go in the area you are in.

I moved to NZ 2 years ago and I love it, it's a stunning country full of wonderful people. I think you will have a great holiday here.

As a side note I suggest you visit Hawkes Bay, especially if you like wine, it is one of the great wine regions of the north island.

self drive ! ( just remember you are driving on the left hand side of the road ). Get a campervan, you can stop wherever you like and drive until you want to stop, most places are safe and the locals will look out for you. No snakes, no human eating beasts, no spiders that would kill you, but in some places sandflies may bite you and that's about all you would have to worry about except for the local Maori in some places who will break into your van looking for valuables, so just be aware when in areas where there is a local Maori marae ( settlement ). Have fun !

I prefer the self drive. I think coach tours are too restrictive and way too organised. NZ is easy to drive around and you tend to see more driving yourself. Depending on the amount of time you have I recommend at least 2 - 3 weeks to see both islands. If you are going during school holidays try and pre-book accommodation, otherwise just buy an open accommodation pass and go as you please!!!

Stuck on a coach....no thanks.
Self drive....yes please .
I did a locum in NZ for a while and had a car after to have a holiday. I cannot recommend it enough due to the freedom it affords you. Come and go as you please, see off the beaten track things, and definitely not restricted by 6am get on bus calls.
You will have a ball.
All the best.

which would be completely incorrect. i've got self assurance so undesirable for the Zimbabwe gamers, yet i understand alright that Mugabe will use this as yet one extra reason to justify his place as PM of Zimbabwe. His ego knows no bounds & this could gas it much extra. i'm hoping PM Clarke vetoes the excursion.
