Tinman has a good point. Tasco or Simmons will serve you well. With an M1A you should probably go with a variable power scope, say 3 to 9x, rather than a fixed power scope like a 4x.

If you can afford one and care to spend the bucks you can buy a good Leupold or Burris for about two-fifty.

the real truth is that tasco is all you need they're the cheapest on the market and work as well as any and here is the good part if you drop your gun and the scope is damaged which can and does happen you won't be out as much money an old timer taught me that when i was very young i've got two expensive scopes because i didn't listen and they're both junk i keep them for a reminder

Zwarovski scopes have the best lenses and are undoubtably the best scopes for rifles.

You need deep pockets.

Someone mentioned Leupold already, so I will add a couple more good ones..
Nightforce - 3.5-15X56 or 5.5-22X56
Leatherwood
Schmidt & Bender
Zeiss

IMHO, Zeiss and Schmidt & Bender make the finest rifle scopes in the world....
