I get bad heartburn as well. I am 19 weeks pregnant. I have suffered from heartburn most of my life and now it is just awful. Here are a few tips that I have found over the years; dont eat anything fatty or any food or drink that takes a long time to metabolise may give you heartburn, milk should actually make it worse unless it is really low fat ther used to be a theory that milk fixes an ulcer and therefore if the acid is caused by an ulcer then it will fix the acid my specialist tells me this is an outdated theory; water can make it worse as it slows down how quickly we digest food so only drink cold water if you havent eaten anything for a few hours; dont lie down or bend over at the waist if you feel any acid, if you must lie down only do so on you left side; lastly take an antacid just when you start to feel any sign of the acid, prevention is better than cure becuase once the acid is up high it seems to take longer to get rid of. Mine is pretty bad this week so I have started taking the max. dose antacid each day at the same time even if i dont feel the acid yet. Oh yeah, someone might have said this but no peppermint! If i have heartburn I even use a herbal 'no mint' toothpaste. I also found this site but I havent tried the remedies on it, might try the vinegar idea now though.... http://www.otan.us/webfarm/emailproject/heartburn.htm

Things that have worked for heartburn that are allowed during pregnancy: TUMS!! Works very well, but some work better than others. Experiment a bit, but don't exceed the recommended dosage. If nothing else, too much calcium can give you kidney stones. A glass of milk will sometimes relieve mild heartburn for me. IMPORTANT: If you have heartburn that isn't relieved by even Tums Ultra, you need to tell your doctor! It's a bad sign! Anyway, I gave in and got two kinds of Tums, wintergreen and cocoa/creme, because I was getting heartburn that would keep me up. Sadly, now I'm 32 weeks and my problem is that I can't breathe while laying down because of the position my baby's in. It just never ends. ;) Anyway, the wintergreen Tums works a little better than the cocoa/creme ones, and I hear Tums Ultra are the best, even though they taste like chalk (not my words). I've no clue why on the flavored ones.

Edit: Oh, and I just read some of the other posts. Water may or may not help. Up to you to try. But water actually makes my heartburn worse for some reason. Just as a warning.

I had this same problem during my pregnancy. I had gall stones though not heartburn so hopefully you only have heartburn if these ideas don't stop the pain go see your doctor because it could be your gall bladder.

1. Drink a glass of milk. Should work immediatly. (if you prefer chocolate milk this is ok if its only a small amount of chocolate)
2. Don't eat anything or drink anything but water 3 hours before you go to bed.
3. Get a wedge pillow so that your not sleeping flat. Acid can't go back down when you are laying flat.
4. Sleep on your left side. Its scientifically proven that sleeping on your left side helps (and not just with heartburn).
5. Stay away from triggers. Chocolate, caffinated drinks, peppermint, fatty or spicy foods, citric foods, smoking and alchohol (which your probably already avoiding). Think of this as nature giving you a diet!
6. Chew gum or suck on hard candy. It creates more saliva and saliva has built in acid blockers. Not 100% effective but it helps a little.

Heartburn is most likely after a meal. If you notice that your heartburn isn't coming after meals or another trigger it could be gallstones. A lot of women get gallstones while pregnant, so pay attention to your body. If milk doesn't stop the pain then it could be gallstones. Also if your like me and you crave spagetti during your pregnancy but its a trigger for you then add brown sugar to the sauce it neutralizes the acid. Good luck!

Exactly the same with my first born. I had bad heartburn, if you can't handle it, rolaids are safe and effective. The sleep thing is also right on schedule. I know you are tired, but it's normal. With my second (I am 15 weeks) the insomnia has already started, I only get 2 hours sleep per night since I was 8 weeks, I am a wreck, it varies from women to women.
I am about to start meditation classes. I also will do Yoga one day a week (special pregnancy yoga) You subconsciously are worried about the baby, so besides sleeping pills which you wont take, you will have to try and put your mind in a relaxed state in order to be able to get through the night.
Try a glass of warm milk at night before bed, then try some breathing excercises in bed, you will fall asleep in no time. Try this site out for starters :

There are some things you can take while pregnant to help with that. One idea (although it's not the best health wise but does work) is if it's REALLY bad, have some soda. You can't drink too much soda or caffine while pregnant, but if you only drink it when you get the heartburn, it makes you burp and relieves the pressure. I had HORRIBLE heartburn. Only soda or throwing up helped me.

Drink a little milk before you go to bed. I'm pregnant too and have the same problem sometimes. I also try not to eat anything too spicy or heavy for dinner. If that doesn't help, ask your doctor what you can take for the heartburn.

Always talk to your doc first, but my doc told me it was ok to take either benadryl or Tylenol PM for sleeping, and tums, maalox, rolaids - work wonders for the heartburn (which I have been eating like candy).

the nice thing about the Tylenol PM is that if you do have back pain or anything at night like I do, it does help to relieve it.

Good Luck!!!
