It all depends on what country you are in, what your credentials are, and if you have any experience in the aviation industry etc.
Like the above answers suggested, an air force pilot with 2000-3000 hours experience on any type of jet has an excellent chance to make an airline pilot. On the other hand, if you have a degree in say physics or engineering, if you have the ATPL and IFR ratings, and in good health and have a good attitude about yourself, you'd have a very good chance of making a pilot for a small commuter or charter company.
Most of the airlines are looking at 2000-3000 hours of accident- and violation free- experience before putting you on as a F/O, so that's the critical thing here - flight hours! So you will be putting in time on a Pilatus PC-6 or Twin Otter before you get right seat on a 737, and then working up from there.
All the major airlines are highly unionized, and its seniority that counts toward getting advancements in responsibility and pay - not necessarily the bext pilots get those advances.

Yes, the Air Force is the most logical source of pilots for the airline industry but Navy has pilots too. You would have to be an officer in the military as most Petty Officer positions do not include piloting.
Even pilots in the military have difficutly with being a big airliner pilot and those highly talented "Top Gun" type guys haven't much a chance at Boeing 747's... now that tanker pilot or B52 pilot... those guys can walk right into a airline pilot position just about anywhere.

Do two things (I belive you are from India):
1. Look for vacancies in the newpaper for Ministry of External Affairs (under RAW). I believe they require pilots for their aircrafts
2. Approach Jet Airways, Sahara or Indian Airlines...but you will require around 15`18 lacs for further training on Boeings (iknk Hyderabad or Malaysia) which you will get back as a part of your pay when you join the airlines after the training.
3. Gain experience by flying as an instructor at your local flying club and watch for vacancies till you get one.
This is what a lots of pilots do....Good Luck!

The surest way to get a job as a commercial pilot is to join the Air Force. Most commercial pilots are Air Force veterans.
