There is a new product on the market for painting over artex and it smooths it all out. Can't remember what it's called and it would probably be a lot dearer in the long run than replastering. It's never too late to replaster

You will never get Artex completely off. And yes it is hard work. I know that you said don't say re-plaster. But in all honesty, if its just one wall, a decent plasterer could have it looking brand new in a couple of hrs. Scrape the nibs off the Artex "if its a "stipple" sort of pattern, PVA "glue" the entire wall. Cover one coat 50-50 bonding + finishing plaster, this obliterates what is left of the Artex pattern, & then a top coat of finishing plaster. 2 hrs later, brand new wall. If this is a definate no no. Then try Nitromors "textured" paint remover from B&Q. Its expensive & very messy. In all honesty having the wall re-plastered is the best and easiest option. Good luck

Poor you! If you can afford to get someone in to fix it do that!
As another respondent said there is a product you can skim over the walls with until you get a flat surface but my experience of plastering of any kind is that to get a professional finish you need a professiomnal plasterer. You could even put hardboard over it which is what my builder did over my artex ceiling. That solved it without any mess!!!!!!!!!!! Removing it is so hard and the wall underneath is likely to be in a bad condition and need plastering anyway by the time you have finished. Admit defeat now and save yourself a lot of hassle :-)

you can use a wallpaper steamer then scrape it off ,you will need to sand the walls after to get it good enough for painting etc and the whole process is very messy ,if the artex isnt too thick the best policy is to get a plasterer to skim over the top

It depends on whether it contains asbestos. The website gives suggestions ranging from covering it up to steaming it off.

messiest job ever! find a cheap plasterer and have them skim the surface. failing that you can steam it like wallpaper or sand it. sanding is super messy though.
