I think the idea of god came in the minds of early humans, in the begining of human evolution, by looking at the power of fire, which could burn the forests, the sun, the moon, the wind , the rivers, the earth etc. The idea of god as of today is a refined version of the earlier versions. So, as a logical conclusion, worshipping objects in Nature may have been the first kind of religion on the earth.

History tries to record Hinduism as the oldest religion but there is much contraversy over the history of the egyptians since scientific records show that the pyraminds and history of egypt goes beyond the time hinduism had began
Hence Hinduism is not the oldest religion
The oldest religion must have began in egpyt and was believed to be the same people who built the pyramind, the sphinx etc and it is also believed that they were godlike people who either were aliens or disappeared to where we do not know this is a weired scientific, religon and mystics study that will only confuse your further though evidence of things like the pyraminds are there we may not get the correct information because the academias in these fields disagree with each others theories and findings

If you study the history, the first humans - primates up didn't have any - then Homosapeans, when they found stuff they cannot explain started worshipping them - like stones, trees, mountains etc. Then the next step was Sun, Moon and the stars - this evolved in to Gods and goddesses - like venus - It was the Sun that became Zeus. Then they took off the Intangible elements with humans - like Zeuse became God almighty. The same happened in India - but in India, the difference was they started worshipping actual humans - like Ram - though people call it a myth, there was an ancient king called Ram in India - may be the concept of Vishnu and Shiva came in as the human face for God. But most others were real. After a while, this concept was taken to the Middle east region by a person called Eshwaha - who was Ishah of Nasreth. (Jesus) - Jesus feld to india when he was small to avoid being killed. 500 years before Jesus, Buddha came with the concept of No God and a totally different path and definition for life based on more logical reasons and explaining the un explained with proof than stories.

All god based religions would have and should have perished by now if not for the Great Constantine, Justin and a few ministers of rome. They took advantage of the Peganise beliefs, Preachings of the great Samson, John (the baptist) and Jesus and made a new religion called Roman Catholism. Down the line, when some Catholics realised that something had gone wrong somewhere they started worshipping God through Jesus and called them sleves Christians.

Then came the Bright Mohammed who didn't like what was happening and went on his own parth and created Islam. All this time, Jews managed to salvage what ever was left from their destroyed Golden temple and protect one of the oldest beliefs of Judaism.

Still this would not have been a problem to the whole world if not for the Europeans invading other parts of the world and showing their religion down others throats as well.

The Red Indians believed in living in harmony with the nature, Mayans and Incans again were worshipping Sun and other forms of nature.

From what the great Constantine did, the human races evolution or development was stopped for almost 1500 years. Imagine the Human race in another 1500 years - that's where we would have been by now if not for what happened 200 years ago.

This is coming from a Christian's perspective...

Judaism was not the first religion.
Wicca was not the first religion, although some form of paganism certainly was, at least in the way we think of religion today.
This is verifiable both in history and in the Bible...

Judaism did not truly come about until the time of Moses. Moses delivered the Jews from the Egyptians, who were certainly very religious people, and their religion would certainly fall under the category of "paganism."

Now, I do believe that the God of the Jews was worshiped long before any pagan god. But it wasn't a "religion" in the way we think of it today. Before Moses God was worshiped by families, not by communities. There were no formal commandments until Moses gave the people the 10 commandments. There were no sacred texts, no sacred rituals. We do know that animal sacrifice was a part of worshiping God in those days, but there were no priests, no prophets, no religious leaders other than the head of the family.

So, was paganism the first religion? Yes. Adam, Noah, and Abraham, however, were not "Jews," but privately worshiped God before (or perhaps during in the case of Abraham) the first pagans worshiped their gods.

For thousands of years humans have believed in some form of a religion, or belief of a supreme being or beings. This is known because of the discovery that primitive beings buried their dead.

The first known peoples to bury their dead were the Neanderthals.

Next after that, Hinduism - it has the oldest recorded roots in Dravidianism. Dravidianism was estimated to have been practised around 6000 to 3000 BCE and predates Sumerian, Egyptian and Babylonian cultures.

previous respondent: was it really necessary to include an entire book on the wiccan religion in your answer? why not a website link since you obviously copied and pasted the info from somewhere else. Since wiccan was not the first religion, then that info was irrelevant.

Your question did not specify if the religions had to still be in practice...
But
All the religions that would probably referred to by others who would be answering this would all be monotheistic (which are fairly new in the grand scheme of the world), and maybe one of the few multi god religions like Wicca, and voodoo and other pigeon religions.

Wicca is new, was formed around the time of the early settlements of America, and a major land mark for it would be the witch trials. So Wicca is anything but old.

The Christian faith came around during the roman rule...at which time the gecko roman gods had previously been the major faith.

If I remember correctly the Jewish faith was started around 1400 B.C., I could be wrong, but for talking sake let’s go with that.

Yes the religion is old, but as you go father back you find religion after religion that existed, and if I remember right I think Hinduism started 2500, B.C. ..The oldest practiced religion.

The ancient Egypt religions started around 3500 B.C., and...So on and so forth...that’s as far as my knowledge goes...check out Encarta and wikipediea, they have good sources.

hmm
definitely not christianity (and I'm christian)
not Judaism. really it did not take shape until at least Abraham (?3000bc)
Moslem's will say it is Islam because they say God made Adam say the shahada when he made him (as people here have already alluded to) but there is no evidence of this until the Koran 1400 years ago
Zoroastrians claim their monotheistic religion began more than 6000 years ago.
Was that a variation of the Jewish / christian / Islamic root??
there where also many other religions, and variation that predate writing
The biblical writings say that early many 'hung out with God' it was a relationship not some man made mechanical institutionalized machine for reaching God. I rather think God likes it like that.

That is like asking which came first the chicken or the egg.....no one knows. I would say Judaism is you believe God created Adam and Eve, if not then I would go with some form or nature religion because nature is what controlled people and they would therefore fear it. Of course by the same standards one could argue that a religion worshipping animals would also be likely as they would have been in fear of those predators as well......

I really don't think anyone knows. Records don't go that far back in history. By studying cave paintings and the like, many believe that people worshiped particular animals, or the sky, or the earth, etc. however since these conclusions were reached with very little evidence and were based almost entirely on interpratation it is really anyone's guess.

As far as the earliest recorded religions, you may want to reasearch ancient Sumerian, Egyption, or Aztec beliefs.

Ok let me set this straight for you.

WICCA was constructed in the 1930's.

However....Wicca is BASED on the world's OLDEST nature-based religions.

So, even though Wicca is comparatively new, it still embodies pretty much the world's oldest religion from the caveman/hunting-gathering days.

The nature-worship religions are the oldest because primitive people used to attribute a god or goddess to the thunder, the sun, the rain, earthquakes, etc. because they didn't understand them and thought the gods were either angry or pleased. The early hunter-gatherers also used a form of sympathetic magic in order to ensure good hunting. Wicca is based around this form of sympathetic magic, and this pantheon of many gods/goddesses with different attributes.

Ancient Egyptian is pretty old too (predates Christianity or Judaism), but not as old as the caveman nature-based religions.
