My roommate is a member of the American Endurance Ride Conference and she does endurance riding on her 10-year-old Arabian gelding. While I’m a marathon runner, she suggested that I tag along with her as she goes on her training rides. She indicated that she usually maintain a trot.

Should I take on her challenge? Would I be able to keep up with her?

Why dont you just give it a try to see if you can match the horses stride... You said your a runner...not jogger. So if the horse has a more gentle trot you should be able to keep up fine. But if the horse is a hell bent trotting machine..lol...you may find it difficult. Plus it will depend on what kind of terrain... are you used to running on dirt paths? With hills and what not.... that will be a little more difficult for you also..... I have horses and i couldnt imagine someone trying to run with me on some of the trails i hit...lol Good luck!

I would go. You two could actually start participating in an endurance event called ride-and-tie. There are two people and one horse. The horse and first rider take off at their own pace and the second person starts at a run. At certain points along the trail, the rider gets off, ties his horse to a tree or whatever is available and then takes off at a run. When the second person gets to the horse, they get on and ride to the next check point, where she gets off and ties the horse and takes off at a run and then the other person reaches the horse and takes off on him. It is gaining popularity in the U.S.

If she is maintaining a steady, even trot, then you should be able to keep up with her just fine.

You might be able to keep up with her. It depends on the horse.
My horse at a trot has a huge stride and cover alot of ground but he is also a big horse almost 17hands. Much bigger than an Arab.
It would be a nice change of pace for you and company for her.
Have fun

probably would its a good training as horses keep a good steady pace for endurance riding, wouldn't recommend it for novice marathon runner but you sound like you are easily able to take the pace

Well in endurance riding they monitor horses heart rates and things like that at checkpoints throughout the race so their pace isnt that quick. I wouldn't recommend it to you if you are a novie runner but if you are in Schmicko condition it wouldn't hurt to try!!!! Enjoy!
