I always have the sneaking suspicion that the person who takes round the envelope only does it to avoid doing any actual work and hide the fact that they didn't put any money in themselves...

Well I suppose it would be practical but I've never heard of it being done either.I always give an amount on how well I know the person that is leaving or having a baby etc,but sometimes it can get to be a bit much especially if they come back after a few weeks, having found they are not happy in their new job.

As for the divorce, We are nations of positive and secretive hence we only announces what is good and not what is bad. Divorce is seen as a failure in many part of the world. I hope we never collect for divorce. Let us hope that the institute of marriage continue. Just make sure you are not the last man standing. I advice you to resign now and get your own collection.

Must admit it mostly depends on how flush I'm feeling but depends on the situation or reason, not sure about the whole divorce thing - I take it you would give them cash rather than a present but some may find that a little offensive don't you think?

How about a collection to support someone while they look for a new job? I would donate to that. (Real collections depend entirley on the situation, like you said, they ARE voluntary)

Yes, money collectedfor a divorce is a great idea. It would go towards a blood-sucking solicitors bill!

Yes, your're right, it would make sense but it might kind of rub someone's nose in it I suppose tho at least they'd be able to buy a pint with it.

It is a problem. I'm afraid I just contribute, a smaller sum for the lesser things you've described, more for leaving or marriage.
