Islam: Submission to Allah. That pretty much sums it up. You're probably looking for the 5 pillars though: Only one god and one prophet* (muhammad), pray 5 times a day, help the poor, travel to mecca, and fast during the ramadan.
*The Shi'a sect stipulates that descendants of Muhammad are also prophets and should rule all islamic countries as the Caliphs, something that has been fought over many times.

Islam comes from the root word 'salam' which means 'peace'. The word in totality means 'peace acquired by submitting one's will to God'. It is strictly a monotheistic religion which claims to be on the path of Abraham. The best definition of God for Muslims is mentioned in the Quran, Surah Ikhlas, 112:1-4 which states:" Say:He is Allah (God), the one and only; Allah the absolute and eternal; He begets not nor is He begotten; And there is nothing comparable to Him in this Universe".
Muhammad is the last and final Prophet of God according to the Muslims and the Quran is the final revelation of God to mankind. It confirms the truth present in the previous scriptures (Torah and Bible) and corrects the interpolations introduced into them down the ages.
The five pillars are: Tawheed (Unity of God),Salah (prayer five times daily), Zakat (charity), Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca) and Saum (fasting in the month of Ramadhan.
Islam is probably the most misunderstood religion by both Muslims as well as non-Muslims. The best way to understand this religion is to study the Quran (in Arabic, if possible or a translation by a good author, Yusuf Ali or Marmaduke Pickthall) and understand every verse in their proper context. This requires a need to study commentary as well. I think this is where people misinterpret the words. The laws or rules that are mentioned for a particular situation or a fixed period of time are sometimes applied generally. When I studied the text in their proper context, I found it to be a very practical religion.

The first and most important part of Islam is complete submission to God. Secondly I'd say it's peace. As someone who will be affecting the security of our nation in the future I want really make sure that I mention to you that not all muslims are terroists and not all terrorists are muslim. It's only a small group of Muslim extremists who are causing trouble and I reall sincerely hope that you will not let that affect the way that you deal with Arabs and Muslims on the Job aftern you graduate.
