When I am very highly stressed, I fit the textbook definition of BPD like a glove; however, most of the time, I show none of the signs.
I think that some good statistics would give us a better understanding of the prevalence of BPD in society, and whether it is a single "disorder" or several similar problems. Unfortunately, most surveys regarding mental health are only performed on people who already know they have at least one mental disorder, not the mentally stable.

I know my ex has it. I blamed myself for alot of our problems after we split up. Went to a psychologist, she listened to my description of my ex and then showed me the description and symptoms in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). I can say for sure she has 9 out of 10 of the symptoms and I believe you only need 5 or 6 for a positive diagnosis. It sure answered a lot of my questions about what went wrong.
Go to the your local library and look up the disorder in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders).
If you really believe you have Borderline Personality Disorder, my only advice is get psychological help, this disorder isn't something that can't be changed, and you will never have healthy relationships until you can get a handle on your disorder.

everyone can have the bpd traits. What makes you a borderline is the intensity of the symptoms...if they interfere with having a productive life...and you must have a certain # of these to be given the bpd diagnosis.
People are really quick to diagnose themselves.. this is not a healthy thing to do... why would someone want to label themselves with an illness that they don't have?

Actually, I'm Undiagnosed with Narcissistic Traits. Most people have a few elements of one disorder or another, but you have to fill the full requirement to be diagnosed.

Unless you've been diagnosed, you don't need to tell yourself that you are. Go to a competent psychologist and get an evaluation.
